Hi Kit,

Beginning Saturday September 17th The Black Forest Theater (located at the corner of MLK & I-45 in Dallas) will host ‘Scholastic Saturdays’ for 135 youths, ages 6 to 12, displaced by the devastation that struck the Gulf Coast region.. With the leadership of teachers and administrative staff of St. Phillips School (S. Dallas), children currently housed inside Reunion Arena and the Dallas Convention Center will receive tutoring, mentoring, counseling and educational guidance in what is a very turbulent time in these young lives. The program will run from 9am until 2pm, every Saturday, indefinitely.

The state of Texas opened its doors to our brothers and sisters from Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama in the wake of wide spread devastation of their homes, business, schools and churches caused by hurricane and flood damage. It is the duty of Americans to not only assist those in need with basic necessities such as shelter and food but to reach out with compassion and care, attempting to increase the quality of life for these families/individuals. Dallas community leaders, including Erykah Badu (Exec. Dir. of B.L.I.N.D.) and Dr. Terry Flowers (Headmaster of St. Phillips School), have come together with volunteers and contributors to provide a safe and positive environment for hurricane evacuees to call ‘their own’. If ever there was a cause that needs support from all areas, it is this one.

The staff of B.L.I.N.D. asks for your support, specifically in the following areas:

  • · Arts and craft supplies (crayons, paints, construction paper, glue, etc.)
  • · School supplies (notebooks, paper, pencils, folders, book bags, etc.)
  • · Snacks (individually packaged chips, cookies, candy, etc.), bottled water, fresh fruit and juices
  • · Restaurants or catering to donate lunches for the children and staff
  • · Volunteers to assist on Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. at the Black Forest Theater
Donations can be delivered to the Black Forest Theater on Saturdays, starting September 17th, from 8am until 3pm. Donations (monetary or products) can also be mailed to Scholastic Saturdays, 1409 Lamar Street, Suite 004, Dallas, 75215. B.L.I.N.D. can arrange to pick up large donations. (call 817-713-4028 to schedule)

In addition to these items, we will have an on-going need for monetary support to cover the overhead cost associated with maintaining the program (cleaning crew, security, purchase tables and chairs, etc.) and o provide a stipend to the teachers and instructors. Checks can be made payable to Beautiful Love Incorporated Non-Profit Development (B.L.I.N.D.) and mailed to: 1409 Lamar Street, Suite 004, Dallas, Texas 75215, or you may contact Denise Harper at 817-713-4028 to make a credit card contribution (100% of your contributions will be allocated directly to this program.) All donations are tax deductible. Please visit the website www.blackforesttheater.com for more details about the Theater and B.L.I.N.D.

The children of this life-shattering turmoil, represent a component of this tragedy that had no control of their outcome. They are in desperate need of our strength, positive energy and compassion to help uplift them as they along with their families begin to rebuild their lives. Your support of this program is deeply appreciated and much-needed.

Volunteers and to make donations call Denise Harper (BL.I.N.D.) at 817-713-4028
