Out of town Bands that have played PT

Other Links of Note

It was started by one guy (the guy with the burger) who used it as a monikor to raise a ruckus, and have some fun...

The Shedboyz started long ago when two creative people started producing events and other projects.  Most of the work that both boyz do in the real world is outside of the state, involved in other aspects of the music and technology industries, but together and individually, we have produced some fun events over the years in PT...so hence, Shedboyz was born to promote the local shows that we all help with in one way or another, and support a burgoning rock scene in the area.

Born from the “Shedboyz” craze in 2000 when the Seattle times did a story on people who were “dwelling challenged” in Port Townsend, this is really a cooperative effort with the bands, promoters of local music, sound and lighting engineers, and others who bust ass to bring quality shows to Port Townsend and the surrounding area. When you hear Shedboyz, it could be any number of a collection of people who stay up too late, and work hard at what they do. They spend it all on the passion of music and art. This is just a forum to promote the efforts of the people in the Port Townsend heavy music scene.  Most of us like...bands that rock, packed shows and fast food.  Most of us hate...Bands that don’t promote their shit, trust funders, people who think they are cool, but really are lame.  For Expanded bios, see below. - contact us

As we mentioned, the Shedboyz can, and are any number of people that are producing shows and supporting rock in Port Townsend at any given point in time, but there are some key people that make this little engine go, and they do have a history working to provide great entertainment in the area, build careers, and encourage the next crop of bands that come along. Here are some of the people that currently make the boyz...the boyz.  Please realize that it sometimes takes 12 people to put on one show, and that we want to ESPECIALLY thank all the security, loaders, venue staff, ticket sellers, local merchants and others that you don’t see below.  There is no way we could not do it without YOU.

The Promoters

Matias - At 15, he started helping Dan and Dakotah loading in gear, and doing production for the Legion Hall shows.  With a lack of venues in town, he has proven to be a the first “promoter” not in a band, but doing it just because he loves the music. That passion showed in his first promotion in 2005 at The Boiler Room, the first time in 3 years (since a Waiting for the Sun show) that the BR hosted an event with bands from the legion hall scene, hosting the Inkreats, and Kitsap band Patterns.  Check out his big bio here.

Dan - Every town has a band that if you go to a house party on a Friday night, you will run into at least one of the members of that band no matter what. You know...the party boys that chew on rock and roll like it was a Key City steak, loving every bite. Libido is Hadlock’s party band.  Dan is their guitarist. Realizing that more promotion = better shows and more fans, Dan and the band featuring former Khrome drummer Bobby, Circle of Fear bassist Adam, and probably the best hard rock guitarist in town Pete started building a base of fans in the Hadlock area that continues to show up at PT shows, and has numbered what seems like all of Chimmicum High at times.  Along with playing in Libido, Dan caught the Promoter bug, and is now on his 4th “Rock @ the Rec”concert series, which combines established bands from everywhere, with new up and coming bands from Port Townsend.  Dan is also working on a record label, Spun Loud Records that will release CD’s from local artists, and is also digging into making Rock @ the Rec a once a month event, and working with a new crop of bands.

Len - Len was the singer for Circle of Fear, the biggest band in PT in the 90’s.  Len would show up at my door in 1997 at 8AM after WALKING from Bremerton to flyer for one of his shows.  It was that dedication to promotion and making sure that each show truly rocked that attracted 400+ to Legion Hall shows back in the day (1994-99) Len was also instrumental in bringing bands to PT from the Seattle to the area, most notably the Pleasseasor and Whyte Out.  Len is also a driving force in the Heavy Metal Warriors career, a project that alone will certainly gain him sainthood at some point.  After moving to San Diego, Len started working on his own project, Stardustsuperkill , and settling into normal life with the ever present and sweet Eva. Len still not only supports the scene, but donates his amazing artwork for many of the bigger Legion Hall Shows, as well as fly’s up for performances with the Warrior’s side project, AK-47

Brett - Promoteing hard music shows till the spring of 2005 before moving on to other musicial and modeling ventures, Brett played in his first rock band, Khrome in 1997 with Bobby (Libido), Cassy (Waiting for the Sun) and Sam (Son of Crossroads Music Owner, George). The band played many shows at the Legion Hall through the 90’s, the one’s opening for Circle of Fear being the most notable, and releasing a CD. He went on to co-found Waiting for the Sun, recording a CD, the band took what money and time they had and concentrated on producing shows that sounded and looked as good as shows that were packing the big Seattle area clubs for $10, they would bring in the same quality show for $3, bringing in out-of town bands, big sound and lights, unique tickets and posters and heavy promotion for their events.  They were also responsible for bringing bands like Alien Crime Syndicate and a new crop of Port Angeles bands like the Lonely H to town, and bringing them regional exposure.  When the band went their separate ways, Brett took his experiences from WFTS, and started producing events on his own, the most notable so far being last years Port Townsend Rock Fest, the first hard rock event in the Memorial Field ever. In Combination with friends and indispensable partners Bo, Neil and Cassy from WFTS, Brett has built a history at the Legion Hall that includes 4 annual Halloween bashes, 4 annual Rhody festival shows, and has been doing print photography and modeling for major companies including Nike.

THINGS that make us go.

The Legion Hall - UPDATE 1/06: The Legion has changed hands, and priced promoters out of their reach for the time being.  Not sure when another show of interest might happen there, but as always, we will let you know. What Was: Lori and the Legion Hall, in combination with the police, Steve Emery, perennial clean up guy Pete, and others at this venue have been supportive of the rock shows that local promoters have put on for years.  The Legion Hall is the only real venue with a capacity to hold 300, and also FEEL like a rock palace.  We thank Lori and the Legion for putting up with a lot, and giving the community a reasonably priced venue for all ages shows. Lori can be found in the Pit of ANY Ministry or Hazel & Gretal show within 100 miles.

The Community Center/Parks and Rec Department - The Community Center has been supportive of not only the shows that the above people produce, but several shows put on by local band Innuendo.  They have contributed cold hard cash at times to help build what is turning out to be a regular venue for all ages rock shows in a town with few venues. They also store the staging the Dan and Jim built for the community, and host a variety of programs for all ages.  It also would have been impossible to throw the PT RockFest at Memorial Field  in 2003 without the support of the Parks and Rec Department.  To all at the community center and Rec Department...we salute you for past deeds.

The Fans

This is why we do it.  Probably the only thing that all of us on this page have in common is that we all try to bring a quality to shows that is a step up.  Everyone works hard and spends a lot of time and money to make sure shows are safe, sound and look as good as any rock show, and feature great bands.  There is no way that we could do any of this without the fan who plunks down his/her hard earned $ to support all of these emerging bands, record label’s, and promoters. I think I can speak for all of the people on this page by saying that the above people will always try to reward you with shows that you will always remember.

The Bands - It would be impossible to do ANY of this without their passion.

In and Out of town supporters. - There are many people no one sees that help support the above promoters in what they do, and make shows happen.  Here are just a few of many that continue to help build the local rock/punk scene.

Joe/Alien Crime Syndicate

In 2002, ACS was a band on the rise. With a regional hit “Ozzy” being played on the new at the time, reality show “The Osbornes” a record out on V2, and a just completed tour with Sugar Ray, we were sure there was no way this band would ever come to PT, but we made the call any ways. Mind you, not only was this a successful band, but Joe owned a premier studio in Seattle, and drummer Nabil is the owner of 3 Sonic Boom Record stores. With absolutely no reason to come to Port Townsend for $100, which was all we could afford at the time seeing as sound and lighting was costing us $600 a show...they did. They not only came to town and rocked, but Joe took an interest in Waiting for the Sun. The band enlisted Joe to produce their CD and in the meantime, returned to PT 3 more times, building an audience, and paving the way for more out-of-town bands to come to PT. Joe continues to be a supporter of the local scene, and is the manager for PA band, The Lonley H. ACS continue to Tour, with their latest CD (Produced by Gil Norton of Foo Fighters fame) doing especially well in Japan, and the band completing trips to Europe and a small tour of North America with former Replacement, Tommy Stinson. A band that has absolutely no ties to Port Townsend, that came and helped the shows in ways that I don’t even think they understand.  For a laugh, catch Joe with his old San Francisco based punk outfit, the Meices on re-runs of Bevis & Butthead.

The Hollowpoints - The Hollowpoints might be from here, but they have been making their mark by touring North America relentlessly for the last 3 years. The Points still make the trip back to PT to show us how its done, and continue to help support a scene that was always too small to hold their energy.

Dakotah - Appearing at a show in 2004 wanting to “help out” he has been a permanent fixture at just about every show since then. He is a student at the Seattle Art Institute and as a roadie and tech, has worked just about every stage in the area, sometimes filling a weekend with 3 shows in 3 counties in 3 days.  Dakotah is more than just a “roadie” he treats his job serious as a heart attack, and has been one of the biggest reasons that the shows rock.

Zero - Zero has worked about 10 shows now (June 06)in the capacity of stage tech.  She has exceled at lighting, producing designs that make the most of the lighting we have, and is learning how to be a great team leader with Skyler and Matias (sorry if I mangled your names) in tow as her assistants. These are the people that REALLY make the show go. If it doesen’t get set up...nothing happens. All hail to anyone who has ever “worked with the crew”.

The “Old People” - These are the people that started this site as a way to support the local music scene.  While they have been a part of dozens of shows, They now try to stay in the background because “people over 30 shouldn’t be the leaders of a punk rock scene”, and while supportive, try to just provide opportunities and resources to help promoters and bands.

Jim - The original “Shedboy”, Jim still is one, but trust us...it’s a damm comfortable shed even with the blue tarp.  Jim does a thousand things no one sees.  Most recently, he provided the space and talents to help build the staging that the bands play on, and his pictures of bands have been featured in the Leader on a regular basis.  Jim spends most of his time working in Marine Trades, and as a successful marketing and web designer, specializing in the Skate Industry. His collaborations with www.zsportsdist.com has produced sales of skate equipment from all over the world, and his own company www.skidrowskate.com produces carved boards and decks. Jim might be out of site, and one of “the old guys”, but he is always doing things that help support the bands and shows that happen.  He also has been one of the major sparkplugs in working with the city to get the skateboard park built.

Katie - Many kids know Katie from 2 places. If you are “old school” you remember her for being the person who cleaned Elevated Ice Cream for a dozen years, and two, for being the imposing, yet ever “watching out for the kids” person at the front door at a lot of the shows.  Katie is the Co-owner of  Band Passes, a company that provides security products for major tours, festivals, and bands. She also is instrumental in the development of Interactive Itinerary, who’s clients include System of a Down, Ratdog, and the Deftones. Her work has earned her 2 platinum record awards from Trapt in 2004 and incubus in 2002.  She continues to be responsible for promotional and security items for a variety of companies and artists.  Katie truly loves working the door at the shows, and loves the fans that she gets to meet.  Always the first to make sure everyone is safe, Katie is the soul and heart of the”old boyz”

Kit - This will be a little hard, as I am the one who writes most of this dribble.  I will try to cut out the BS...but if you want the full story, it is a long one. Someone on Kitsapbands.com said I was “Aspiring music industry slime”. In reality, I am “Successful music industry slime”.  My career in “the biz” started in 1980, and it’s best to do this in timeline form.

1979-1980 - Played bass in a band. Toured North America

1980-1984 - Got into sound and lighting, working the clubs (The Mabuhay Gardens, The Stone, and the Off Broadway) in the North Beach Section of San Francisco, and other clubs around the bay area.  Memorable shows that I worked on in one capacity or another included some of the first shows by The Dead Kennedy’s, Megadeath, Slayer, Joe Satriani, Night Ranger, Vain, Testament, and shows by the Tubes, Cheap Trick, Robin Trower, Pat Travers, and Bow Wow Wow.

1984-1990 - Much of this time spent without a “home” Although I did spend time in Europe, and LA.  I toured as a sound engineer, stage tech and tour manager for a variety of bands, clubs and events.  Highlights from this time period include working with Paul Young, SIN, Ratt, Live Aid, Bitch, Living Coulor, and working LA’s Sunset Strip “clubs of the day” like Gazzarri’s, The Roxy, and The Palace with bands ranging from X to the Meat Puppets.

1990-1993 - I live in Boston and start booking hard rock bands at clubs like The Rat, Axis, and the Rockpile.  I made no money and struggled, but booked great bands like Stickmen, Powerman 5000, Tribe, and others, and worked the local club scene as a sound engineer.

1993 - to now - After one more “tour of the road”, I moved to Port Townsend pretty much broke and tired of the road, and got a “regular job”. This lasted about 6 months until the bug to get back into the music business got the best of me. I started my “2nd go-around” in music writing musicians-based columns for The Chicago Reader, California’s BAM, Seattle’s Rocket, www.harmonycentral.com, and Tacoma’s Pandemonium magazines, and started my own local arts and editorial paper, The Pier with Katie. About 1995, I met Len Enders and he invited me to work with local band Circle of Fear. Out of all the shows I have worked big and small to this point, my favorite were always local bands, playing in small clubs, and even though I was getting older, the desire to help bands rock was still there and I appreciated the chance to work with a local band once more.  I co-produced the last COF CD, and then while continuing to work COF shows, put on a few local events with national acts, most notably Otis Day & the Knights at the PT Brewing Company with partner Jim, and Dr. Hook and The Medicine Show at the Back Alley with good friend Sean Morse.  In 1996, me and a Nevada businessman invented Interactive Itinerary, a travel tool for touring bands, and later, Band Passes, a service that makes promotional and security products for the entertainment industry. I also am a consultant on everything from convention marketing to event management .  Clients of mine in the last year include Ratdog, The Deftones, The Santa Barbara Film Festival, Trapt, System of a Down, Smile Empty Soul, Nelly, NASCAR, and dozens of others.

On the downside, I am hard to get along with, impatient, and my ‘east coast” comes through a little harsh for most people around here.  My hobbies are supporting bands, my work, and pleasing Katie.
