About this site: Port Townsend is hailed as an “artist” community, but a ton of the people from PT that have made a living and an impact on the world playing music that didn’t come from the cute little blues and jazz clubs in the area, but from a bunch of kids who wanted to “rock”. While local arts charities like the Centrum needed million dollar budgets to produce workshops and fiddle festivals, and were receiving most of the attention from the only newspaper in town (a weekly), a group of salty kids browered money from their parents and entertained over 15,000 of their peers between 1994 and 2006. This is why this site was built. To give attention to some young people with big aspirations, swimming against the hippie-tide to have some fun in a small town that has little support for young people who want to play rock or punk and produce concerts on a professional level. These local musicians and their fans were so passionate about what they did, that our message board garnered over 12,000 posts over the last decade, making other local “adult” boards look like hacks. We encourage you to check out a slice of Port Townsend life that spawned music careers and a lifelong passion in the arts based on ROCK. While the large shows that spawned this site, and the people that made them happen have “moved on”, their are still some amazing performers and bands to watch in 2010, right in your own backyard.
December 26th, 2009.
What is it with Xmas and me thinking about local bands? In any case, with nary an update in 2 years, we thought we would give you the gift of local rock, so check out the rare cuts by some bands from the past in a sec. It looks like the last of the “big” shows has run its course, but their are still some great bands out their for you to feast on. SOS just got out of the studio with Joe from Alien Crime Syndicate and laid down some tracks at Orbit Audio. Fatal Frequency, featuring Pete from Libido, have been playing out and probably have the largest following of any local rock band in town (The old alcohol plant/Numos is the place to be on new years) and the bands from Port Angeles and Sequiem are making some noise, while throwing a hell of a lot more shows than PT can muster. Mainly some really good small shows at Coogs. The Fixt has toured up and down the cost in 2009, SHSTL is going on a full on US tour and we hear they are VERY tight live, local DJ Style E is still playing gigs around the area, and the Lonely H continues to circle the US winning some critical acclaim from the likes of SPIN magazine, The “people that moved” are doing just awesome thank you, with Innuendo playing out a whole bunch in Seattle, Knothead going on a big tour in 2010, and The Hollowpoints signing to well respected Sailors Grave with a new CD in April. A lot of you know that Parker from the Nihilist has joined Queensryche. He was kind enough to fill us in on some of his adventures playing in from of 75,000 in Europe this past summer, taking along Chris Z from Lunatic Fringe as a stage tech, and is expected to contribute more in the writing of a new CD in 2010. Brett from Waiting for the Sun/Khrome/The Hollowpoints just got back from Japan where he showcased some songs. In some light, some dark must shine... Both New Faces and Down we Go (Rich and Jesse from Nihilist) broke up with Rich now playing in Koosbane, and frequent Peninsula visitors Schoolyard Heroes gave their next to last show in Port Angeles last week. You probably won’t here from us for another 2 years, but we encourage you to check out some of the fine local bands that are out there. I told you guys that the new millennium, the zeros as I like to call them, would suck. Here’s hoping that your 2010 and beyond is just the way you want it to be. Now...for your listening pleasure, some VERY rare cuts and favorites, many of which you won’t find anywhere else on the web, for your listening pleasure. JUST RIGHT CLICK AND SELECT SAVE AS TO DOWNLOAD THE SONG.
Dr. Neelsen (Len from Circle of Fear) - Deth Hippies On L.S.D. - I herby declare this the BEST produced song to ever come from an artist from Port Townsend. As Len would say...”Wear your headphones”.
Civil to Strangers - Around 1995, when the Boiler Room was run just by kids and devoid of the 100’s of thousands of dollars now necessary to float their boat, this was the first band I heard come out of the joint. Also, a cut from the same time period from Shelly’s Wrist. DIY Recording has come a long way.
An amazing song, Gold Star, from Seattle’s Common Heroes. They weren’t from PT, but played a few of the big shows back in the day.
Featuring Ronnie from the Hollowpoints on guitar, The Dreadful Children was a well respected band.
Who can compile a list of Peninsula hard rock and rap without featuring one of the best cuts from our own local Legend, The Heavy Metal Warrior. Local lyrics that matter.
It can safely be said that the love of the Hollowpoints spawned more bands that anyone from Port Townsend. The Inkreats were a good one. Here is a live cut from a Legion Hall show in 2004
Before they founded Waiting for the Sun, Brett talked like a chipmunk (being 14 will do that to everyone), and Casey was actually shorter than 6-foot. Here is a cut from their first band, Khrome
Dan Demay’s and Pete’s band Libido, and their tribute to Dakotah with an H.
“The band of Chris’s” we ust to call um. Here is an old Lunatic Fringe cut for your moshing enjoyment
It’s safe to say that DJ Style E has played more PT shows as a DJ than anyone ever in Port Townsend. Here is an excellent example of his spinning talents.
A Classic from The Nihilist
Kitsap counties Trophy Wives made several appearances at the Legion Hall. this is our favorite tracks from them.
The Classic Song Ozzy by Alien Crime Syndicate. Recorded live at the Legion in 2003.
December 25th, 2007. And now... The 2007 SHEDDIES!
2007 out…2008 in. The end of the decade is near. Always a good sign for music, and time for another “Sheddies”, our look at some of the stuff that mattered round’here. We have included the winners from year’s past as well. Perspective is a good thing :)
- · Best after show food. – “After show” has kind of taken on a new look on the Peninsula with more bands that played all ages shows in the various halls or the still-missed Upside being replaced with shows in the clubs. This means that sustanance can actually be achieved AT the venue. Yep, no more stale peanuts from the Legion bar because they were too lazy to make food or a late night trip to Safeway to see what 8 foot sub was left after waterfront closes…this years winner goes to an actual place that makes food, The Water Street Brewing Company. The hang out we all know as the place Richard Gere kicked some ass in front of has expanded its menu with old school dude Jesse Rose and his creative food. A mix of northwest faves and basic tummy-warmers. An honorable mention for munchies during/after a show goes to Sirens, but we have heard a few reports that the drinks are so good that it really doesn’t matter what the food tastes like. kind of like a White Castleat 2AM. 2006 Winner was - Safeway takes the cake (2 foot sub) for the 2nd year in a row…but with a twist. It has become common knowledge that bands who lived here and moved away hit the Chinese at the Safeway because “no other Safeway Chinese tastes like the one in PT”. We are investigating the different elements into why this might be so, and will let you know what the DNA test says when the lab results get back. – 2005 winner - Best after show food. - Well...for one show, it was the Underdog hot dog cart. But the bastards got us hooked and then bailed because of a broken wheel. This would make our choice the “show-sub” as we call it. You know. One of those 3 foot 2 inch subs from Safeway that have been sitting in the case all day for $3.99. If you want um, you gotta get there before 2AM.

Best Death-defying feat/trick – The new breed of bands haven’t really taken to any real shenanigans that we have heard of, so this years award goes to Love Doll Swingers/local soundman Walter. He has hooked up the community with a 200 volt box for the Legion Hall so that the power won’t go out again. Those of you who know, know that messing with the Legions power IS a Death-defying trick. The 2006 Winner was... - Last year’s winners were filled with bass players somersaulting off of high stages, exploding gear, and singers leaping off the overhang at the back of the Legion stage. This year’s winner is KitsapBands.com for their most excellent April Fools trick saying the they had sold their site to The bible-thumping church that owns Bremerton’s Roxy Theater, and taking the scam to levels of new trickery. They had a good 100 local fans wanting to donate money, server space, and time to stop the evil-good bastards. One of the funniest things I ever saw on line. 2005 Winner, Best Death-defying antic/trick. 3rd place, The Trophy Wives singer jumping from the stage overhang about 12 feet to the stage. Len from COF used to pull that one. 2nd Place, The Common Hero bassist Kyle, so disappointed with the turnout at a summer show that he decided to summer sault dive like there was a crowd...but there was not. 1st place. Alan, from The Last Goodbye for bowling himself into his wife/bassist 40 year old tube amp and wreaking yet another perfectly good guitar, while causing injury to himself in a way reminiscent of the OK Hotel in 92. Well done bro.
- Best PT show - It was a sad year for all ages shows, at least big ones, so our choice is The Blakes/CI show at Sirens where they spread the word for young people to “stand in the hall and catch the bands”. More shows have followed that are all ages friendly, and we think it’s rad that the club has shows featuring rock bands that wouldn’t have a place to play in town otherwise. About as “rock” of a roster as that venue has ever had. Honorable mentions go to The Upstage for the ballsy move of just bringing blues god Johnny Winter to town, and the Hells Belles Benefit (Click for some VERY cool video from Jim) at McCurdy, Pavilion. The 2006 Winner was - The Skatepark Grand Opening - The Nihilists, Captain Incognito, Patterns, Lucius Clay, The Inkreats, Gypsy Joy Ride, Hula-hooping dude and others. One of the only times I have seen the city, the kids, concerned adults and just about every kind of band in town from funk to punk play in a show that was entertaining, sounded good and made sense. 2005 Best show - Hands down, it was the Brett Pemberton promoted Chinatown, Aiden, Nihilist, Schoolyard Heroes, HollwPoints in January. Be a long time before a top to bottom show that good will be here again.
- · Best Out of Town Band - Its always cool when a new band is brought to town and they and the town just kind of “gel” This years winner, The Rock and Roll Soldiers from Eugune, OR, have garnered a secure fan base of people who diden’t know who they were a year ago. A great band that has given PT it’s time, and played some great shows here in the last year. The 2006 Winner was - For the 2nd year in a row, it has to be DEK, and for all the same reasons they won in 05. Our runner up winner is The Blakes. Looks like the hippies in the over 21 clubs finally found a rock band that they love. The Blakes have found themselves playing the regular circuit of clubs on the peninsula, and we have never heard of ANYONE that doesn’t love them. 2005 Winner - Best Out of Town Band - My vote is for DEK not just for what they did onstage, but off. Many don’t know this, but they are responsible for bringing The Briggs, Angel City Outcasts, Phnomonauts, and others to town, when none of these bands would have come to our dusty hamlet without their help.
Person of the Year – This years winner, Matias Booth, pretty much was responsible for most of the indie rock shows that happened in 2007. He also produced a free show, spending hundreds out of his own pocket to make it happen, supported bands at their other shows, and really.. just loves music. Got that...Spend own money, support other peoples stuff, love music. Sounds like a plan. The 2006 Winner was - Steve and Quimper Sound. I remember when the Goodwill opened in PT. Even before it opened, 3 other thrift stores either closed, or reduced their hours. Same thing when Hollywood video opened. Before it even let a customer in the door, 2 video stores just gave up at the sight of a store with promo that didn’t look like a 4 year old did it. In the face of major chains like Tower closing, and indie stores dropping like flies around the country, it would have been easy for Quimper Sound to just shut it’s doors and claim defeat as so many spineless ones do to the evils of another store moving into the area or in the case of the record industry, it’s whole way of life changing from records/cds to downloads , but not this one. Steve expanded his store to a cool new location adding a kiddie mosh pit, a wider selection, provides a small stage in store for local acoustic and DJ artists, and has sold 1000’s of concert tickets for local promoters and charities for free. That just touches the surface of how Steve has tried to make Quimper Sound one of the few “record sores” that will survive the internet age, and do it with soul and passion. Person of the year part 2 – Matt, The Upside. In the first 4 months of 2006 before they closed, PA all ages rock club The Upside held more hard rock shows then PT held in the last 5 years. They went just “rock shows”, but presented bands that would have never come anywhere near here, and provided a generation of fans with memories that will last forever, in a venue that had “the vibe”. Matt and the others that “worked” The Upside showed us all how hard it is to run a venue, and how cool it can be when you pull it off, and how sad it can be when it ends. We will always miss The Upside. Person of the Year, 2005 Promoter/Libido frontman Dan Demay. The last 7 months of shows would not have happened without him Zero, Skyler, Dakotah and a host of others. DJ Style E. has been to every show with his lights and help, even though rock isn’t his main gig, he supports, and is INVOLVED.
- Shedboard topic of the year. - The rise of the Hip-Hop nation is the winner. OK, while maybe not a “nation” around here, rap, hip hop, and dance music in general have had a good year locally with former residents Knotheadand Rubio clicking off appearances, and locals Zip Locc releasing a CD, a few have taken to the boardto spread the word, and are the ones this year that have tried their best to use the board for what we built it for. Honorable mention goes to former Hollwpoint/WFTS’s Brett Pemberton. Whether from Japan or NYC, Brett always checks in and brings up great topics about him, his music, and his travels. The 2006 Winner was - Once again, The Warrior is the winner with his ml?State of the Warrior Nation TM? address. Once you see it, regular YouTube can’t compare. 2005 Winner, Shedboard topic of the year. - Dirty Whore, No Talent. Unexplainable.
- · Fan of the year – It would have to go to Matias Booth as well. For all the reasons above PLUS, did we mention he really likes music? The 2006 Winner was - The Parents. You must “Sing” this one to the melody of Foreigners, “Women”… Women in fast cars, women who own bars, women with spare living rooms, women who make the crowds swoon… None of the big shows that happened in 06, would have without the parents (yep. The guys too). Every fan of local music would be up shit creek without them. Fan of the year, runner up – The 2006 Winner was -
Mike “The Dad” from DEK. He doesn’t even live here, but “the dad” from DEK is not only a fan of the music, but has worked his but off to bring small towns all over the Northwest “The Rock”. History will show just how special it is to have not only bands like DEK willing to play here, but also will go to bat to bring along bands like The Briefs and The Accused to a town that would have never seen a bands like them otherwise. Fan of the year, 2nd runner up – Kelsey. How else can you explain someone who can be seen tolerating/enjoying the 4 chord rock playlist of Lit’s Friday night radio show from the studio AND the simplistic drones of what is usually played at the BR while making coffee. All kidding aside…she goes to shows, supports EVERYONE as a fan, and donates a ton of time to people doing good things like the BR. Most of all, she loves music, all music, and is just one of the coolest fans we know of. Another one of “those people would be Myles, who gets our nod as a cool fan as well. 2005 winners. Fan of the Year - Its a tie. Althya. Gotta love someone who comes to all the shows, gives rides, brings more girls, and is genuinely bummed when she does miss a show. The other is Matias. Not only does he truly love the music, but helps out at almost every show working with Zero and the Lights. Steven Tyler from Areosmith once said that without fans like them, rock shows wouldn’t be any fun. We agree.
- Band most likely to actually make money playing music for a living - Last year’s winner with a new name, New Faces did everything they should in 07 including some great out of town shows, getting some recording done, and refining a sound that makes you bob yo head at the very least, and imbed their hooks in your brain the morning after a show on most nights. They have a gaggle of Seattle dates coming up at the Comet, Funhouse, and that true test of if you actually care if people like you or not, the EMP Battle of the bands. Other than making old people everywhere go “Isen’t that Rod Stewart’s band”, a great year for a band that has a chance to make a ducut and some sense in this bidness. The 2006 Winner was - A tie between The Inkreats and Captain Incognito - Both have catchy songs that keep getting better, entertaining performances and a fan base that loves them, all at an age where I was still trying to jump the fence at Frampton concerts. 2005 winner Band most likely to actually make money playing music for a living - Shotgun Kisses. They may play a lot of covers, but there are a lot of bands that make $1000 a night playing covers, so don’t laugh. Besides...they rock at it.
- · Most Improved Band - S.O.S. takes the nod this year. You can see the influence of bands that grow up in the same group or play the same shows together, and locally there is no better example than the “Hollowpoints-Nihilists-Inkreats” progression that we have all beared witness to over the years. This has not stopped this very young band from finding a voice that is their own, while still reminding you of the pedigree they have. Roaring guitars and in your face vocals are serving a songwriting style that is part Cramps, and part Robert Gordon. Please keep playing music. I beg of you. The 2006 Winner was - Captain Incognito. Barely a band a year ago, they managed to get some homemade recording done, write more songs, and play a few Seattle-type dates. 2005 Most Improved Band - The Inkreats. These guys will get scary-good in 06.
- · Band we wish would have stayed together - Much as we would have liked to see what The Inkreats performances would have been like by now, this years winner goes to Buffalo Voice. Being that they were neighbors, when they practiced, they kept the crows off my roof, and my dog at the other end of the house. Nice job boys! A sheddie closes your too short PT stay. The 2006 Winner was - Patterns. Oh how we need more female rockers. A good band getting better before they hung it up. 2005 Winner - Band we wish would have stayed together - Lunatic Fringe.
- Local Band of the Year – No band on the Peninsula has done more this year than the Lonely H. With a full tour of the US in 07, and one in early 08 that includes legendary venues like Austin’s Stubbs and Jersey’s Stone Pony, this band has done lots of cool stuff this year. Spin online band of the day, releasing a new CD, being on MSNBC, and building a national fan base. All these things and more make us dare you to google their band name. The 2006 Winner was - Dead Whore River. In a see of “punk” and blues-based rock comes the almighty DWR. If I had one Peninsula band to play for my life, scare Bin laden out of a hole, or make a crowd go Ooooo!, it would be this one. Technically a great metal band, and they stepped up their live schedule to include El Corazon and Studio 7 shows that cemented the fact that this IS the best live band that lives on the Peninsula. Local Band of the Year part 2 - The 2006 Winner was - The Lonely H. Baring calling the Hollowpoints, who we really haven’t lived here in 3 years and are in the “hall of fame” anyhow, no other band has done more in 06 than the H. Mind you, they have had some great people helping in their corner, but the songs are great, they played shows ranging from creative local gigs and benefits (The Fair? at 19?) to big-time venues in Seattle like Neumo’s. All this while gaining great press, and the respect of a vast audience. These guys will be huge. May or may not be with this band, but the future is indeed bright. 2005 winner - Local Band of the Year - The Nihilist. They have improved every show, and now put on one of the best around and recorded a great debut CD. To top it off, like those that have come before them, they have helped promote shows and encourage new bands.
- · Local MySpace site of the year - Knothead gets the sheddie this year. Don’t know of another artist with local ties that has used the thing better to get and promote gigs and find opportunities for him to play music outside of his base in Spokane. The 2006 Winner was - Brand X Formerly Anti Barney Superstar. With all this technology, you think someone would do something USEFUL with it all. In any case, Brand X has tried his best with his pt_local_music group to give the local rock loving mass regular updates, and a local forum other than this. Plenty of entertaining stuff comes in 2nd, but a MySpace site of the year? I am frankly amazed it made it to year 2 without the man messing it up. 2005 Winner, Local MySpace Site of the Year - Missionary Mercenary and PT Local Music
- The Local Hard Music Supporter Award. – Promoter/fan Matias wins again. We vasalate between his brilliance and the fact that he is the only one that really is promoting shows outside of the clubs, so he kind of wins this one by default. Honorable mention goes to Nancy and Sirens who have mixed up their roster to include more rock shows at the venue and supporting her guys in New Faces. The 2006 Winner was - The Boiler Room. While we make no bones that we really support larger shows, on real stages, with real sound and lights, and real big crowds, those bands have to start somewhere. No other person or venue has featured more rock shows in PT than the Boiler Room. From a sparsely attended Stalin’s War show that deserved more of us to show up at, to a steady stream of the artists that have played the venue for years like the Solvents, The Boiler Room stepped up it’s efforts in 06 to bring a wider swath of music to the small room, and featured several bands from around the world, as well as more music/art/skate related events than I can ever remember. The Local Hard Music Supporter Award, Runner up - The 2006 Winner was - The one thing that always makes me happy is seeing great pictures and video from the local bands/shows. People like Jim, Kyle, Carson, Daryl and others give us an insight into
the shows that you just can’t get any other way. Artists, photographers, and writers who document local music will always be important to many, and while there is nothing like being there, we salute the art that surrounds the music.
- · Coolest Addition to the local music scene. The resugence of the Clubs. Clubs in PT, Sequim, Port Angeles, all have had an upswing in bands that rock. Venue that in prior incarnations were anything but rock have booked a year worth of shows that would not have played the area in years past. The boyz from Minor Imperfection clicking of duel shows with DEK was an addition that was not here a year ago, and 2 of the only big all ages shows in PA this year. The 2006 Winner was - Skate Park – Skate and rock go hand in hand, and the park has provided a great opportunity for local kids to get together, skate, and talk about music. We hope that the facility is “used” and that the city sees the correlation between “skate and music”, and fosters that into producing some summer shows at the venue. We will see, but the Skatepark already has been the best addition to the local youth environment in years in Port Townsend. Coolest Addition to the local music scene, runner up. – The 2006 Winner was - Radio. All respect to Dick Rossetti, (the End DJ who recently lost his job), but there can’t be anything funnier than REAL drunks who play guitar getting together to talk misguided politics and play local music. Throw in a revolving series of local freaks and Nurse Angie to keep all of Dan’s twisted chemistry experiments in line, and how can you not listen on Friday nights to the only local waves that matter (or that we have). There are other shows on these indie waves, but are pretty much what you would expect from a station in PT. A lot of dribble about environmentally sustainable something-or-other. Pretty much like that Saturday Night Live skit where they mock how silly public radio can be. Dan’s show however can only be considered a throwback to a simpler time when the absence of log books and rules meant real radio with no other agenda other than a party. More indie media please and where the hell is short-lived rag Blue Dog Black?
- · Words that need to go away. This has always and always will win this topic… Rock and Punk. Till then, we will be here. Honorable mentions for words that need to go away include: Guitar Hero, Green, Rap, Rocktober, social networking, radio, A&R, label, Swag, Emo, Indie and Rad. Funk can stay as long as Prince is still alive and Tower of Power and George Clinton still tour.
October 20th, 2007 - With the exception of Zip Locc staying busy with the release of his CD “Product to Profit”, some stellar gigging from the former Captain Incognito, now freshly named New Faces, and the summer band Buffalo Voice clicking off a show or two, we bid ado to a sucky summer on the local rock scene. Falls our favorite time of year, and bidness has picked up on the local watch, so hear goes. New Name...Same good game... The above mentioned New Faces didn’t waste the summer. They Produced a cool little video that plays as our favorite local “concept” vid ever, a series of shows at credible Seattle venues like The Comet, songs that just keep getting better, especially the arrangements, and recording with Brian Brown, a Boston producer who worked at Q Division and Fort Apache, (two studios I have spun knobs at), and worked with a bunch of cool talent including the most underrated jam band ever, The Addison Groove Project. All in all, a solid period of work for this band who is way ahead of the curve for as young as they are, and are swimming the same waters that The Blakeshave had great success with. We suggest you see um at the Legion Hall, or for that matter, anywhere, as they are making the rounds all over Western Washington Den Mother Props... Water Street club Sirens has been booking a semi-steady diet of indie rock bands since The Blakes started making the rotation about 2 years ago. The vibe has extended to all ages on certain nights. Following a roady week show with Brett Pemberton and others that allowed under 21 to hang in the hall, the venue is continuing to encourage the kids to come on down, with November 2nd for The Greatest Hits being a good chance. To top it off, they helped do PT Radio when the word “radio” didn’t sound about as old as Windows 3.1
. Hip-hop to the hippady-hop... There is more Dance, Rap and R&B than I have ever seen festering in the area. We are craving more from Polished Opinion, Rubio is making waves in Seattle, Style E continues to play the area, and the above mentioned Zip Locc is working on several projects and collaboration’s recently. The most anticipated show for those in need of something in this genre has to be the Oct 26th show at the Boiler Room with Spokane/Hadlock’s Knothead, M-Dub, Killa V, and the return of AK-47 featuring the Heavy Metal Warrior. We bow to thee... Hard enough to do a real show in this town, let alone a free one, but we all have Matias to thank to for a great Legion show on the 26th starting at 9PM after the homecoming game with The Rock n Roll Soldiers , New Faces and a new band, SOS making their first trip into the Hall. The M-man is also working on a deal to bring another show to town that will bring a Seattle favorite to town. More when he says it is so. New Faces abound.... Not those new faces. Damm. The other new faces, and plenty of them are poping up on the radar. An Identity Crisis, SOS (Souls to Save), and Dash and Chauncey’s eclectric are just 3 examples of local cool stuff that is stirring. Check them out. Old Faces kick ass.... Well I don’t know how much more rad you can get than The Hollowpoints in Germany during OctoberFest, but that is where they are. After winding their way across the country to Boston. The band has spent the last month in Europe, and will be releasing a new CD in 08. some other old friends, Down We Go, have been killing audiences on their US tour. The band features Richard and Jesse from PT Band Nihilists. Former residents Chris Gunn and The Low Ones are doing fine in Tucson playing a lot of shows, and local favs Lucius Clay will be playing the 27th in their yearly Halloween bash at the Water Street Brewing Co.Around the Edges... Port Angeles saw Minor Imperfection and DEK host the Schoolyard Heroestonight (the 20th) at the Masonic. By far the most entertaining thing in the Kitsap world seems to be whenthe Warrior hits townfor Bowling night, but we do think you should check out the always entertaining Kitsap Bands.com for a host of great gig listings and whinny message board posts. Speaking of whinny posts, don’t forget to check out our little board. It’s the biggest message board on the Olympic Peninsula and filled with frustration and angst. Till next time. Be good, but call it like you see it.
December 17th, 2006 - So I can’t go to the Living End show at the Croc (pisses me off) and it looks like there is enough life in the scene for our 2nd annual “Sheddie” awards. 2006’s winners for the best in the area coming right up, but first...the news. If no one will adjust the poster, I guess we will... That’s right, DWR is NOT playing the 30th show at the Legion Hall in what promises to be an otherwise stellar way to end 06 and bring in the new year. The Heretix are a PA band that hasn’t played PT yet, and Innuendo is just off a date at Seattle’s Chop Suey while attending the U-dub. Goin South... Looks like The Nihilists will be playing a San Francisco date with the HollowPoints in January, with Portand, LA and Vegas dates in the works. More local shows please?... Other than the 30th, their is a show being planned in March at the Legion Hall, possibly a January show, and PA is looking like it is hosting more shows of late, with a pair of benefits and Andy’s (Minor Imperfection) Schoolyard Heroes show which drew a solid 300. Forces are at work to bring more noise to PT, and summer is just around the corner (OK..up the street)
And now... The 2006 SHEDDIES!
we have included the winners from last year as well. Perspective is a good thing :)
- · Best after show food. – Safeway takes the cake (2 foot sub) for the 2nd year in a row…but with a twist. It has become common knowledge that bands who lived here and moved away hit the Chinese at the Safeway because “no other Safeway Chinese tastes like the one in PT”. Best Death-defying feat/trick – Last year’s winners were filled with bass players somersaulting off of high stages, exploding gear, and singers leaping off the overhang at the back of the Legion stage.
- · Best PT show - The Skatepark Grand Opening - The Nihilists, Captain Incognito, Patterns, Lucius Clay, The Inkreats, Gypsy Joy Ride, Hula-hooping dude and others.
- · Best Out of Town Band - For the 2nd year in a row, it has to be DEK, and for all the same reasons they won in 05.
- · Person of the Year – Steve and Quimper Sound.
- · Shedboard topic of the year. - Once again, The Warrior is the winner with his “”State of the Warrior Nation TM address. Once you see it, regular Utube can’t compare. 2005 Winner, Shedboard topic of the year. - Dirty
Whore, No Talent. Unexplainable.
- · Fan of the year – The Parents. Fan of the year, runner up – Mike “The Dad” from DEK. We agree.
- · Band most likely to actually make money playing music for a living - A tie between The Inkreats and Captain Incognito - Both have catchy songs that keep getting better, entertaining performances and a fan base that loves them, all at an age where I was still trying to jump the fence at Frampton concerts. 2005 winner Band most likely to actually make money playing music for a living - Shotgun Kisses. They may play a lot of covers, but there are a lot of bands that make $1000 a night playing covers, so don’t laugh. Besides...they rock at it.
- · Most Improved Band - Captain Incognito. Barely a band a year ago, they managed to get some homemade recording done, write more songs, and play a few Seattle-type dates. 2005 Most Improved Band - The Inkreats. These guys will get scary-good in 06.
- · Band we wish would have stayed together - Patterns. Oh how we need more female rockers. A good band getting better before they hung it up. 2005 Winner - Band we wish would have stayed together - Lunatic Fringe.
- · Local Band of the Year – Dead Whore River. Local Band of the Year part 2 - The Lonely H.
- · Local MySpace site of the year - Brand XFormerly Anti Barney Superstar.
- · The Local Hard Music Supporter Award. – The Boiler Room.
- · The Local Hard Music Supporter Award, Runner up - The one thing that always makes me happy is seeing great pictures and video from the local bands/shows. People like Jim, Kyle, Carson, Daryl and others give us an insight into the shows that you just can’t get any other way. Artists, photographers, and writers who document local music will always be important to many, and while there is nothing like being there, we salute the art that surrounds the music.
- · Coolest Addition to the local music scene. Skate Park – Skate and rock go hand in hand, and the park has provided a great opportunity for local kids to get together, skate, and talk about music. We hope that the facility is “used” and that the city sees the correlation between “skate and music”, and fosters that into producing some summer shows at the venue. We will see, but the Skatepark already has been the best addition to the local youth environment in years in Port Townsend.
- · Coolest Addition to the local music scene, runner up. – Radio. All respect to Dick Rossetti, (the End DJ who recently lost his job), but there can’t be anything funnier than REAL drunks who play guitar getting together to talk
- misguided politics and play local music.
Rock and Punk. Till then, we will be here. HALL OF FAME WINNER!
August 1st, 2006. Spelling errors and confusing grammar are always free. Mid-summer always seems to bring a lull in the action, well the lull is about to get shattered in a big way with new shows, and the approaching back to school show that is bound to please. But first, as always...the news. The band we want to hear... We have always said that a lot of local musicians, while kick ass now, are REALLY going to be interesting when they are in their 20’s, then many of them are now at 17. Enter a crop of PT veterans that are getting together in an informal way that, if it turns into a gigging band, will turn heads right away. Jesse, Parker and Ben from The Nihilist, Chris Z former of Lunatic Fringe, along with Neil, a former member of the Sadie Hawkins Rejects are planing on cranking out what has been described as “kind-of phsyobilly”. No doubt Jesse will be playing his new 6 foot white (at least for now) upright. If it happens, this band will destroy. Holla Hoddar... The aforementioned unnamed bands first chance to play in PT might be a return after 3 years of a revamped Kane Hoddar in a November date at the Hall. The Kane just returned from a trip to Japan and is sharing the stage with The Hollowpoints at Bumbershoot in September. Road Trip!....Speaking of The Nihilists, hopefully you caught what was probably an excellent road trip show on Sunday at the Seattle Drum School with The Inkreats, Delusional Label, and PT’s Capital Incognito. Another good one? catch a double bill of The HollowPoints and The Nihilists Aug 12th in Marysville. You can see um too... The Hollowpoints have a cool video posted at www.youtube.com and are playing some dates in Cali before the 26th show. After that, they giddy back out there on the road, as it seems there are a lot of new points fans and radio stations around the country that are just now discovering the band, so recording a new CD has been delayed for now. We might get the first tastes of some new stuff on the 26th. Thou shalt create more shows when the sun goes down earlier... A cool September show has been announced at the Hall on the 23rd with DEK, The Mechanical Dolls and Ryder Strong, with another band to be added. A little cool fact about that show is that the Dolls have acquired the services of former Common Hero bassist and winner of our 2005 Sheddie for best stage dive, Kyle. A cool 21+ show coming right up features Portland’s very cool Young Immortalsare playing Sirens on the 19th of August at 10pm. We also here that several people are getting it together to provide what would be the 6th annual Halloween shows with some cool bands being lined up. The Legion Hall Lawn will not get rain on September 2nd, but if it does, you should head on down anyhow for an outdoor show with Captain Incognito and wave band The Jetsons B-Ham. Frankly my dear, I don’t give a Dan... Seems like now that the Drive Inn is open, they have gotten a little hipper and started playing some local rock, or it just might be that thing called the Evening load on 89.7 that has featured a ton of local noise and guests including the Warrior and Len Enders, along with new intern A-dog/Nurse Ang (who is looking for a better name), and in her ever formidable way is keeping those boys in line with their dribble. 2 beer cans up around here. Check it out. Speaking of AngieeeeeeIwantmyBinkie!.... Congratulations to Angie Hart (who helps with some of the Legion shows working the door) and Kipp Miller who had a healthy baby boy, Aidenn. Yes he is named after the band, showing that the little scene around here and the bands that play it can even inspire people not in their teens. You can meet him on the 26th. Less than a month old and his first show will be a Briefs one so you know he will be a badass, and is the future administrator of this web site weather he knows it or not. Nice Arrangement. They get rock, We get to rock... Kudos to Jennifer Taylor and The Inkreats who are working on getting together a cleaning/improvment crew for the Legion Hall. The management of the Hall has been very open to the idea of more rock/punk shows at the venue, as witnessed by the full slate of at least once a month shows through the end of the year. Rewind back to this time last year and you will find that the 05 school year brought us a scant sprinkling of shows while the hall underwent a management change from another planet, and the Boiler Room didn’t really host, let alone pursue hard music shows at the newly opened location. Fast forward to now and we can see that the 06-07 season looks to be the best ever with the energy of new bands, new promoters, a new manager at the hall (his name is John. Thank him when you see him), and blood at the BR that brought in some great events for summer which is usually pretty slow when it comes to shows. Our thanks once more go to Be-B (Zero, Becky and a host of others) for helping to make better BR shows go down, and we look forward to seeing what Josh from the BR does while Be-B plays in Portland. The point of this dribble is that there are some great bands, people, and places in town for young people. Be prepared to have fun, because between now and January, the action around town for young people and fans of hard music is picking up. A reminder.... Make sure if you want to be covered in this little infrequent online rag (where’s my Blue Dog Black!) to send us your info.We usually find out what is up, but if you don’t tell us, sometimes we won’t know. Good help is hard to find... As we once again push a band that hasn’t even been a band for a while that we always liked (so there) the Tri-county’s Shotgun Kisses think that they have found a new electric throat,.,.,mabye. The MySpace sites of the month had to be Parkerswhen I saw the picture to the right, which proves that you always need to watch your back in the big city. The other one is this girl, who’s bulletins just crack me up. Also Lit and Cujo. Saturdays movie will be? The MySpace Band site of the month is from Sequim’s Justin Forshaw. Whatever it is with the land where John Wayne parked his boat and “Metal” in a very broad term, it seems that See-quiem is turning into a little haven for it. Pretty much spans the spectrum from Justin’s blazing old-school Vai-type thang to DWR, who just seems to be chugging right along, and winning over fans every time they play. We think its because they have a Taco Bell. Also check out The River City Rebels who put on a great set at the hall last month. Time for Hero’s and Zeros. Their is only one Hero for the month of August and that is Katie. Happy birthday, and thank you for being the best person I know, and my best friend. Zeros for this installment includes every damm member of the bush administration. Dammit, get Bill back! Do we really have 2 more years of this guy and his buds? I know I said I would keep the politics down, but it goes so well with music. Get ready to vote if you can in the October congressional elections. Till later...
June 19th, 2006. I never did like Summer. Everyone splits on vacation, big shows worth seeing are in bug-infested sheds in the middle of nowhere, and the sun just shouldn’t be up in the middle of a rockers night. That doesn’t mean that the ones who do like the sun and are sticking around don’t have some awesome summer fun planned. But first...the news. Some money raised...Some fun had.... The show this weekend was cool. Minor Imperfection got things started with a great set, at an early hour. They said they hadn’t played a show in 6 months, but you couldn’t tell. The 3 piece barreled through a set that was energetic, and songs that made you want to see them again. Another Lost Hero played next. It’s safe to say that these guys can, and probably will be a force in the local rock scene if they continue to get stage time, as their 2nd Legion performance was powerful enough to see where this band can be in a year. Songs like Downward Spiral have already been stuck in my head in its raw form for a bit now, and it will be interesting to see where the band takes their hooky punk as they progress. A band that promoted shows themselves at the Hall, Innuendo hit the stage. While admittedly rusty after not playing a show in about a year, the girls still pulled out older material that showed that fun and passion can still make up for any missed notes, and it was awesome to see them back playing in PT. Brett Pemberton and his band including Ty and Sam were up next. Most of you know the history of Brett’s musical endeavors in this area, and he showed once more that strong songs, catchy hooks and tortured soul vocals can always mesmerize. Sam, who pulled double duty with Hard Candy, sported more drum techs than Travis Barker, and was soooo “rock”. Seriously, a real bright spot watching a drummer that was super solid. Ty was solid as well in holding down the bass and Brett? Lets just say he gave us another one of those evenings that made us even more amazed at what he can do. After a solid set of songs featuring not only “that” guitar and vocal sound that a lot of us love, but a punked out version of a Waiting for the Sun classic “it all falls down”, he followed it up by helping Hard Candy out on Bass, learning 8 songs in an hour in the basement of the hall after HC’s bassist Bobby failed to show. Brett didn’t just fit in with Hard Candy, he actually took a semi-solo or two on the bass, and revved Christens thunderbird like Gene Simmions. Hard Candy with him, Sam, Isaiah, and Dan finished the show up with a cool set of Hadlock Rock that feature cool riffs and a really cool compliment between the 2 guitars. Hard Candy is always like going to a party in the woods. You never know what will happen, but it will almost always feature a comfortable mix of chaos, fun and slick solos. All in all, another great show, and some cash was made for a great cause in the American Cancer Societies, Relay for Life. Big thanks to all that made it happen, and sponsors the Blue Moose Cafe and Quimper Credit Union. Next on tap is a pair of cool shows at The Boiler Room. The first, this Tuesday, has the much-talked-about ’Stalins War with Oak Harbor’s Haden opening. Both bands are getting a ton of attention and shows in the Kitsap scene, and it should be a show not to be missed. The 2nd show coming up is a unique “girls skate-rock event on the 12th. Peggy Oki,a member of the famed Dogtown Z-boys Skate team will be hanging out at the skate park from 2 to 4. There will also be a best bert contest, and promoter Jim is also getting some others involved in what will bring a true legend of the sport to PT. THEN... at 4:30 at the Boiler Room, they will be showing the documentary, Dogtown and Z-Boys and Peggy will take some questions about the early days of skate afterwards. THEN.... at 7PM, Innuendo will take the stage to close out a great day of real girl-power. Other shows of note in the area this month include a tight billing of The River City Rebels, Captain Incognito, The Boss Martians, Agent Apathy, and Sidewalk Revenge at the Legion on Friday the 14th in a Matias-produced show and of course, our buddies Patterns and Aiden will be at the George on the Warped Tour the next day, July 15th. We shall miss thee...The Amazombies played their last show a couple of weeks back. Not local, but they played dozens of shows with the Points, kicked some serious ass, and will be missed. Don’t forget that there is a pirate. out there somewhere... on weekend nights, and can be found at 87.9. Recent on-air escapades include hang outs with DJ Madness and Father North from Madness of the North, and a great selection of local rock. Besides his regular gig at see-quiems Club Escape (which hosted a recent 21+ DWR show), you can now get DJ Style E’s tracks Here. Steve and Quimper Sound are in full on move-mode, and the new store across from the Rose will be open on July 1st. There will be a vinyl room in the old bank vault, a wider selection of DVDs, a small performance space for acoustic and DJ in-stores, and a coffee bar with tables and chairs. Steve will also keep the store open till MIDNIGHT on weekends. All in all, Quimper is really stepping up what it will offer to local musicians and music lovers. Recorded stuff... A pair of new Nihilists tracks are up and The Inkreats tracks should be up soon. All were recorded with Joe Renike from Alien Crime Syndicate engineering and sound rad. Jim is producing several DVD’s of bands that have played the Legion. All are pretty cool, and all the money if you buy one after the packaging goes right back to the bands. He is into working with other locals who would like live video, so e-mail him if you are a local band wanting a cheap/free way to get into DVD. If you haven’t heard.... The Briefs have been added to the Aug show with The Hollowpoints, The Nihilists, and The Inkreats. The MySpace fan site of the month comes to us in the “about to give birth” mind of Pink Death. She tells us she is really board and would appreciate some MySpace love, as she doesn’t leave the house much anymore. The MySpace Band site of the month is ’Stalins War. Time for Hero’s and Zeros. The Hero’s this time include all the folks and sponsors that worked on the last show this week, all the faces we hadn’t seen in a while, Becky, BeB (Who will be missed for the job she did as the music promotions person) and the Boiler Room for putting on some serious rock over the last month, and having more planned. Please support them, as we hear they could use some volunteers of late. Zeros for this installment are The Centrum’s “”School of Rock. Not to be a downer on a “non-profit”, but please. If you are going to put on a “school of rock” with a portion of your 1+ million dollar budget, and charge kids $60 (300+ if you are from out of state), PLEASE hire someone to be part of the Faculty that has toured with a rock band in this century. No offense, but there are plenty of real rock musicians that are currently working, that the kids would learn more from, and god knows that while they aren’t in your “grant loop”, they would be a closer link between student and teacher than bringing out the dinosaurs to talk about the old days. They get too much of that crap from me. Till later...
May 28th, 2006 - Summers here, and the time is right for road trips, new local shows, and plans for that yearly mass exodus called Warped Tour. First...the news. Kane Hodder lost 2 members, but that hasn’t stopped them. Rumor has it that the departing pieces were quickly replaced by some of the guys from Claymore, and are playing a most excellent show with Stalin's War, The Hollowpoints, and Tiki House favs the Helen Killers on June 30th at the DV Hall in Bremerton. They will also be at Bumpershoot and then taking a break to record a new CD. Rockin the Rec... Steve Grandinettiis throwing a show on the 3rd at the Rec Center with Captain Incognito, Gearth, his band Gypsy Joy Ride, and locals Nameless Angel, Renegade and Soul Syndicate. Advance tix are a cheap $3 at Quimper or $5 at the door. Sorry for mangling your name all these years dude.... We here that this might be the last show for a bit for Sam and Ezekial, who are making the trip to create in Portland. Celebrate the Devil... Dead Whore River is having what should prove to be a memorable show on 6-6-06 at The El Corazone with Left Alive, Church Of Hate, and Breakneck. Lot’s to do on one weekend.... The weekend of June 10th has a few really cool things going on with Thee Naked Andy Faxion Outdoor music festival happening in Poulsbo (RIP Mitzels), with some really amazing local bands. The 10th and 11th has an awesome summer kick off and benefit at the Boiler Room with a whole ton of bands, including the first Shotgun Kisses and Pharmacy sets we have seen in a while. On June 8th, the BR hosts a show with folk/punk band lynched from Dublin, sun skull from Olympia and snuggle from Seattle. Another reason to be stoked school is out... The 23rd has more action at the Legion with the return of Innuendo in almost a year, and a band featuring Brett Pemberton, Ty, and Sam that we are dying to see. Hall veterans Hard Candy and PA’s Minor Imperfection, along with Another Lost Hero (Who rocked the last show) round out a nice way to usher in the summer. All the proceeds will go to a great cause, the American Cancer Society’s Relay for life, and the show is being produced by a collaboration of adults and kids that are the same old faces you have always seen. A reason to look forward to school.... That same collective of people will be producing their first “over the top” Legion show with a “back to school” on August 26th with The HollowPoints, Fall From Grace, The Nihilist and The Inkreats. Wholly Molly that’s cool... Big congrats to Patterns for landing a slot on the Warped Tour, along with a ton of other locals. We will try to get a complete list posted on the board before the show. Recording News...The Nihilist and The Inkreats will be laying down some tracks at Orbit Audio in June, and Jim Anderson will be working on DVDs for both as well. According to Jim.... Speaking of Jim, if you don’t already know, he, along with others have been documenting shows for a while, and he has decided to put together DVD’s from bands both past and present, including the HollowPoints 2002 Legion show, Waiting for the Sun, and The Phenomenauts show last month at Hells Kitchen. The Phenomenauts are actually having big issues with their bus, are stuck as hell in Florida with little cash, and are crashing at friends. While we think it’s funny as hell that men from Oakland are walking around in space suits in Florida, Jim has decided to give 100% of ALL money from the sale of their DVD to the band to help them out. Contact Jim about any of these DVD’s, but he promises that he will have a site up soon with these, and more cool things. Speaking of DVD, CASH MONEY!... You are doing yourself a HUGE disservice if you don’t hunt the Warrior down for your copy of AK-47’s DVD of his show in San Diego. Just awesome, and trust me when I tell you that the Warrior and Lenhit it hard, This DVD is a must have. Log On-Turn On... Kitsap Bands.com has kind of changed the guard from the disgruntled and burned out Mac (RIP. He did a TON for that site while not even living anywhere close to Kitsap. A big thanks you creep :), to the new guard, proud homemade bass owner and former Port Townsend concert supporter Asa . Lots of good reasons to look at that scene, with Valley of the Dinosaurs and others either on tour, or playing a ton of shows this summer. Punk and Politics go so well together...The coolest thing about the internet is that it lets anyone with talent and hutzpah to be as big as anyone in the world. Local bands can have as good a site as a major label band. Please take a moment to visit http://www.savetheinternet.com and take a look at the issue at hand, and if you will, Sign their petition. Those that can afford the new “Internet2” are all set, but that doesn’t include most reading this. Turn the Radio On.... Danno will be hosting him first show on that eye-patch thing that blasts in R-booted Hadlockofonik on Friday nights. Expect him to be playing TONS of local music. MySpace is kind of like the 4-track of the web.... The MySpace site of the month is from The Heavy Metal Warrior. Not only does the guy have the best non-MySpace site in town, but his space kicks ass too! Heroes of this update are all the people who took great pictures of the last legion show and posted them on the Board. Zeros include anyone who thinks we are all going to die on 6-6-06.
May 21st, 2006 - On the week of the first Legion Hall show in 6 months, here we are again with all those little things you don’t hear about, but know they are there. Kind of like the sugar on your rice krispies, so here we go. Rock should not happen outdoors at 10:30 AM... The Skatepark grand opening was a thing of beauty. One of those special days in PT that only happens when everyone gets involved, and the only serious money on the line is the city’s. Coolest Kum-bye-ya event in town since they had that “battle of the bands” think at the Centrum a few years back. A musical review of the show saw the most eclectic you could have in PT while still being an entertaining show. Captain Incognito started things off (did I mention it was early). replacing The Big Whoop, with a set of well crafted songs and a mature performance that rocked beyond their short existence. The thing that was impressive about their set is that I got several people, of all age groups asking me who they were, hours after their set. A sure sign that something credible is going on. Funk band Lucius Clay followed with a set that hadn’t changed much since the last time I saw them, but they were a perfect funky “sunny-day-afternoon” thing. Girth followed, and I know I have said something similar to this before, but Zeke Wakefeild is fun as hell to watch, and Sam is a great bass player as well. No doubt in my mind that if Zeke played more aggressive rock he would be everyone’s favorite local player. Girth serves up a mix of blues/classic based rock that shows off his Derek Trucks (Allman Bros.) based licks and soulful bends, but we would love to see what would happen if he played in a more “aggressive” band. The Inkreats got the first official “pit” of the skatepark going with a show that keeps getting better. If these guys don’t blow you away on Saturday, then I am misreading what appears to be a band that is going down smoother and with more energy with each show. They might have 2nd guitarist Ryan in tow at the show this Saturday, and they will be filming the show for a DVD. Patterns debuted a new line up with a nice powerful set. My wife mentioned to me that they sound like an aggressive Letters to Cleo, which is a good thing, and the new pieces sounded great. Unfortunate that comparisons to Schoolyard are unavoidable, but these guys have there own sound, and will be a band to watch in more interesting reasons than the aforementioned heroes. Style E provided some beats before the closing set from the Nihilist. The songs rocked, the performance was cool, and the Warrior got knocked on his but by a 4 foot purple-haired girl. Musically, this band is a freight train, with triple vocals that make the dual vocal attack of the God Awfuls seem tame. Great to see them back in action after taking a break over most of the winter. Big thanks to the Boiler Room, Cory and Katska, The City, Jim, Walter and the sound dudes, and everyone who made it a cool thing. Mucho pictures on the Shedboard , and a COOL video by Jim. Ya can’t do that thing if you ain’t got that swing... The Love Doll Swingers have been around for a while playing unabashed punk/garage rock that is gaining fans and mixing the best of old boggie rock vocals ala the Spin Doctors with songs that present an abandon akin to Jack White’s new project. Cool stuff, and you can catch Usana, Walter and George live this Saturday at the Boiler Room. If you promote a show for your final class project, and you fail to promote, you get a D.... We guess a show was put on by Sam (Pete from Libido’s bro), but we don’t know who played, or or even that it was happening until the night of. Guess we aren’t as plugged in as we think, but neither were many others as we hear there was only about 40 who showed. You can hear a mouse pee into a cotton ball in the Legion with less than 100. We like kids, especially when they are someone else’s... Congrats to Kimya Dawson who is expecting something out of her belly soon. may it be healthy and full of joy. Feel the love.... The Boiler Roomis throwing some cool June shows. On the 8th, it’s a show with folk/punk band lynched from Dublin, sun skull from Olympia and snuggle from Seattle. On the 10th, it’s a big show and benefit with the Bismarck, shark shark, shotgun kisses, Tyler Reid, the histrionics, plentyface, Captain incognito, owl dudes from Portland, stabbin hobo from Bellingham, the pharmacy, bEe, caveman cyborg, and more. There will be a silent auction and other cool things, and it looks like an all day fun time. Support and involvement is a cool thing. Wonder how long it will be before we see the headline “Teen show at the Legion”.... The Leader has a new arts editor, and she reportedly interviewed Promoter Kid head Matias. Check you bird cage, I mean newspaper this Wednesday for the full poop, but the fact that half the town has called it the mis-leader for years brings up the opportunity for a fun game. Play along with me. Here is the release that we sent them. Let see how many things they change to get it wrong. I just wish they would hire someone who actually understands rock bands to cover what is just as viable, if not more interesting side of the PT “arts scene” than the normal community fluff. More shows coming right up.... Plans are in the works for more events at the Legion (DWR say they need PT...PT needs more DWR), Boiler Room, Skatepark, and other venues this summer, and the good news is all you have to do is show up. You little urchins that say you never have any money can save 2 bones and buy a ticket to this Saturdays Schoolyard show at Quimper Sound. The MySpace site of the week comes to us from Brett Pemberton. Were bummed we missed his Sirens show, and with a full slate of festival performances this summer, a new solo show that mixes a ton of elements, and some updated items in his spaces, our favorite tourtured-soul songwriter is continuing to write material that speaks to the human nature in a way that no other local artist does. The Heroes of the week are H2O graphics. We love it when a local company actively seeks out the business of local bands, and these guys are willing to please, The other Hero is the Federal Air Marshall who lost his job for blowing the whistle on how ineffective post 911 security measures really are. We need more government workers like that. Zeros of the week are just heroes in the making. See you Saturday.
€April 28th, 2006 - Time for another installment of the only place that puts all the local rock in a box and serves it up with a pound of sass. Will load gear for frequent flier miles... We thought we would bring you up to date on the travels of our local (and former local) noisemakers. Dakotah has left to join up with Aiden in Florida for a tour with HIM, and then you can hit him up for tickets/throw spitballs at him during the Warped Tour. The Hollowpoints embark on their US tour with the US Bombs soon, and the band has also been nominated for a Seattle Weekly Music Award for best punk band. . If the points are honest about what they are singing about (Which I know they are), the world needs bands like this more than ever. Another local band nominated is PA’s Lonely H in the Best new artist category, and regular PT visitors the Pharmacy and Schoolyard Heroes Other Lonely-type news has the bands manager/producer Joe Renike possibly doing some stuff with The Blakes. Rock and Water... Sequim’s Dead Whore Riverheadlines July 28th at The free 10th Annual Freedom Festival in PA at Sol Duc Hot Springs. Tentative Schedule features: The Aquaholics, City Of Armadillo, Wingman Down, From The Fall, and a Wet T-shirt Contest (which I will win). Funny what you read when you don’t read this thing...The Stranger has long been known for their funny-as-hell personals and ISawU’s. Well this time, it has hit home with one of our own beloved fans. “I've seen your name everywhere. The Bainbridge Island ferry, bathroom walls, the elevator up to bell town. WHO ARE YOU?! I MUST MEET YOU! My horoscope told me we were meant for each other. Please, write your name in my heart.” is what the post says. ’Click here to see if its you! People who book shows are rad...Lots of noise recently about the seemingly imminent availability of the Legion Hall as a venue once more, with a show booked on May 27th with a great bill featuring Schoolyard Heroes, The Blakes, The Inkreats , Vatara , and Another Lost Hero. We hear it is a team effort, with Promoter Kid kind of taking the lead, but many involved. Another team effort that will be coming to fruition soon sees a June show in the hall as well with The Inkreatsand others. We will keep you posted, but the work that is being put in now, might make for a great late 06/2007 concert season. We hear Richard will be skating through a flaming hula-hoop with a guitar!...The skatepark grand opening on May 13th will feature an eclectic mix of Funk, Rock, Punk and extreme hula-hooping, along with a Tuck Knee event and other diversions / ribbon cutting stuff. Nice job to the Boiler Room and others in getting together a cool event. Click here for the schedule. I have never heard a blues song in a House of Blues...I remembered the first time I walked into a “Hard Rock” and heard a Madonna song. Pretty much sealed the fate of “Rock” in my eyes and brought on the emergence of the “”made up rock palace. Seattle will finally be getting it’s own “pre-fab” rock joint (Other than the EMP) in the form of a new House of Blues that will be right next to the Paramount. the 1000 seat venue should be the place to see Korn as a 4 piece on the downside of their career by the time it opens in 2007. Radio Free Hadlock.... The air is even ripe with something other than the mill and the sounds of it all somewhere around 87.9 in the afternoon and evenings that makes waves from the tri-area to about the PT boarder. We have no idea who, but the “what” has been whole CDs of Libido, Circle of Fear and other locals past and present. Johnny Depp said playing a Pirate was easy, “all you had to do was act like ’Keith Richards”. We think these people probably do. Save a couple of bucks, get free stuff!... and not just your average free stuff. We convinced one of the most talked about bands in the world, Dragonforce to bring on 15 copies of their new CD. We will give YOU one of em if you go down and buy a ticket for $8 to the May 27th show with Schoolyard and the Inkreats at the Legion starting on the 13th. You will get a ticket/pass to pick up your free CD at the show. 1st 15 people only, and you gotta buy the ticket at Quimper, once more starting on the 13th. A New Thang... Club Escape in Sequim has been quietly drawing some good DJ’s and crowds and Style E will be a regular all summer at the venue. Ronnies legs, Bos ass and Bens Breast!... Jim has posted some short clips from the 02 Halloween bash, and promises to post some whole songs soon. He is also starting a service that will allow some bands, including locals to affordably market a live dvd.Anybody’s house but mine...Promoter Kid will also be throwing a nice little H-show in the usual place with Hard Candy and Captain Incognito on May 20th. Jezzz... I feel like I am missing a bunch of stuff, but the ShedBoard has been groovy in giving that news-fix that the hardcore craves. Other than that... The Myspace Site of the month is from the Shotgun Kisses singer Dominic. The band recently recorded some stuff somewhere in PT, and we here is in a market for a new name. The Band site of the Month comes from our PA friends at the head office of Minor Imperfection. Hero’s for the week are The Moms who let kids play, give rides, buy gear and all that other cool stuff. Zeros for this month include people who throw up. Ciao.
April 8th, 2006 - Spring has sprung, and so has the noise, with a whole new reason to get ready for some great upcoming shows. So without further ado, here are the top 10 reasons to live, even if you live here. What in the world?... After our MXPX April Fools joke last year, many were expecting brilliance out of me this year. I was put to shame by those bastards over at Kitsap Bands.com who had everyone convinced that they were “bought out” (like kbbands.com or the shedboyz is “worth” anything) by the Roxy Christen ministry in Bremerton. They wiped-out over 10,000 posts and started banning even regulars with taunts of “That is inappropriate language” and Your gay, so you cant post here”. It had me and others so pissed off I was ready to go 10 rounds in the Octagon with Jesus himself. It will take at least a year to top it, but I will try. The kids are allright...Matias, with the help of Conner and the fine folks at Captain Incognito have thrown a couple of house shows, including a ruckus affair with The Blakes (who are tearing it up live as of late). Look for more house shows and something big in May if the stars and sun cooperate. Speaking of big... The big Peninsula show this month is in PA at the Masonic Temple. It’s Matt’s first outing since his venuethe Upside called it quits on April 1st with The Blakes, The Look, and Adios Pantalones (You WILL come to PT Dammit). Anywho, rest in peace (The venue, not Matt). He plans on throwing a big show a month starting with this one on Saturday, April 29th. Feels like a PT show with The Nihilist first outing in months, the Inkreats CD Release show, The first big show (we think) for Captain Incognito, and the return of DEK. We hear that the others on the bill are amazing as well, and we know it will rock. Skate meets rock=Fall... The Skate park grand opening show on May 13th looks to be a lot of fun with Funky PT residents Lucius Clay, The Inkreats, Girth Featuring one of my favorite guitarist in town, Zach, Patterns (We take it with a new guitarist), DJ Style E, Big Whoop, The Nihilists, and Dizzy Hips (That world record Hula-Hoop girl). A skate demo will go down during one gap between bands, and there will be coffee and goodies provided by The Boiler Room at one of the concession stands. Spend Tax Day on Mars... A recommended Seattle show on April 15th at the showBox sees Aiden opening for 30 Seconds to Mars. Something to sneak into...The Super Secret show that I will let you in on is April 22nd as the EMP is having a private show with Jason Mraz. Some kind of Coffemate promotion. Speaking of talented singer/songwriters... Brett Pemberton has been doing a lot lately, with some new shows as a solo artist, a thing on TV in a talent contest, and a great response to his new CD. Still hard to believe.... We hear that Mega70s-80s band Foreigner will be playing in See-quiem this summer. As someone pointed out, now all we need to know is why. Six name changes and we set your gear on fire... The Trophy Wives, who were, Were Tiger Laser (Dumbest name in a while) are now Ryder Strong. The BR Ramps Up... The Boiler Room is having free shows on a regular basis including an upcoming one on the 15th with Hip-Hop/experimental artist BizArtfrom CA, and a Thursday night Jam that has been popular of late with all sorts of kids and musicians. The Hollowpoints are leaving on an extensive US tour next month opening for the US Bombs. The MySpace site of the month is DEK and Captain Incognito. The fan site is Captain Ron. Heroes for the month include anyone who worked for the skatepark. Probably the coolest thing for the kids ever in PT. The kids and bands who are keeping the noise alive. Zeros for this month include people in positions of responsibility (High school principals, homeland security undersecretaries) who do sick stuff. Later gang....
March 3rd, 2006 - Sorry for the delay in posting an update, but we are back from the Oscar’s (Hey...it’s a LONG show), and are ready to fulfill our duties once more posting the news everyone talks about, but nobody writes about. Speaking on not writing about it, no cussing dammit... Port Townsend Newspaper, the Leader has added a music download sectionto their web site (Free promotion for the Warrior or any band, and a great chance to drive them nuts for a while we say), that already features PT’s above average white-funky band Lucius Clay and world travelers The Solvents. Here’s your chance to post some real noise on the local papers site. The birds tell us...TONS of news on the bands/people front, so load up your coffee pot. Jan. 27th at the Boiler Room, we all got to see the new 3 piece version of the Trophy Wives in the form of “Were Tiger Laser”, and what Hard Candy was up too. Fun, and Matias gave out a free Agent Apathy CD to everyone. One of the Boiler Room-produced shows that hit last month was Dhomm, The Love Doll Swingers and The Toolshed Trio. We weren’t there, but we heard the blues-rap-uber metal jam that broke out at this one was awesome. Guitar players are dropping like flies in Kitsap... After playing a show at the Boiler Room and Sirens, Kitsap band Patterns had ‘guitarist-loss-iccess” and is in need of two new 6-slingers ready for duty. Casey from Waiting for the Sun is back in town and has a new project. Promoter kid produced a house show (thanks Conner’s mom) with the return of The Blakes (Great band with a new CD and a tour to boot) before a Sirens date that had 2 new PT bands that are impressing fans and bands alike. More on that later. Were not sure what it is...but we like it. We think its an independent mag, started by some kids in the county, but the ramblings of Blue Dog Black looks really cool. The bands that played here are playing there... Looking around at what is happening in the real world, it boggles my mind to see what some of the bands that played here last year are up to now. So without further ado, here are our academy award picks in the “were not here because there is better” category. Best Invasion of foreign soil.... Adien has been a band on a tear in Europe, touring twice in the last year, and making the cover of the the biggest rock magazine in the world of this month, Karangg. If that weren’t enough, 06 wil see them leave in about 10 minutes for a US tour with 30 Seconds to Mars, and then pick up one pasty white boybefore returning to Europe, Japan, Australia, and possibly a few Warped tour dates. Europe should also get ready for the Hollowpoints, who will be heading over there in a month, with a US tour in the summer. a GREAT road trip to Seattle would be this Wednsday March 8th when the Points open for Punk Ledgends GBH at El Corazone , and blocks away, Veterans of a show from last year at the hall, The Briggs play the Shobox opening for Flogging Molly. The Lonely H from PA is back in action in a big way with a 2 disc DVD/CD out on The Control Group, and 2 CD release shows that were pretty huge. For those in the civilized world, the band had its Seattle CD release at The Vera Projectwith The Cops (The band, not the Fuzz). The H’s local release show was at the Elks Club in See-quiem with the very cool Adios Pantalones. I haven’t had a chance to see the H’s DVD, or listen to the CD yet, but the Joe (Alien Crime Syndicate)-produced disc has all the graphics and extras that make any Control Group release cool before it even hits the player. Pick it up at Quimper, and stay tuned for a review. The Schoolyard Heroesare on a tour that will take them to The Control Groups SXSW show in Austin with the H. ...Like Texan’s don’t think we are weird already, those 2 bands on the same bill should confirm it. We hear that there are a ton of bands sprouting up in the Freshman class of PT high, and a lot of um are on the “metal” tip, which is rad. We have heard from several people that the project that features former Gypsy Joy Ride member Conner Sisk is especially rocking. We plan on featuring some of these new bands in coming updates, and we hope that there will be places for all this cool new stuff to play, which leads us to... the Venue update (Or where can you catch rock/punk in this town?). The Boiler Room has a new “”Music promotion site and has an open mike every Thursday. The venue pretty much told promoter Matias “Your shows draw to many kids”. We thought the point was to have a lot of kids at the Boiler Room, but it looks like 2 things are apparent. They don’t want big bands or promoters who can draw over their capacity of 38 at least until they get some remodel they say will be done by summer, and you can expect with things like their PR blunder over supporting a person chargedwith resisting arrest and drunk driving, that they are in no hurry to have a rock show that features “moshing” or dancing. They positioned chairs and stuff in the venue that made for a weird show when Patterns pulled through. They did however have a Boiler Day on Saturday with The Pharmacy, Low Ones (Who are recording a CD with Peter Lack due out on Friday, with a CD release show at Sirens), Hobo-stakin, Kimya and once more, about 3 times more “adult” performers than kids and all the regular adults/bands they present that we guess feel don’t draw too many kids. What a waste that they are so intimidated by an overflow of the exact kids they say they want to reach out to, that they didn’t include more of them in their events. The Legion Hall...With a strategy that included a “”Legion Hall restoration benefit that drew a solid 15 paid people with a classic rock band called Spin Cycle as their way back to 300 person crowds filling their venue and bar, don’t expect any brain energy or shows out of the new management of this venue. We heard that they actually want support to afford the insurance to host all ages rock shows once more, but we know of no local hard rock/punk promoter or band that filled the place for years receiving a call for help. The young bands and promoters that “worked the hall” and put on some of the best shows in the area have always been the best friend the venue has had. FYI to the Legion...Now might be a good time to call a band that draws, or a promoter who knows how to promote if you have any real intention of filling the place on a regular basis again. The Rec Center. A show with the Hollowpoints and The Nihilists fell apart, and it seems like this venue as well is in no hurry to promote a big rock show. Too many kids or something like that. Once more...it’s not rock, but the Upsatge and the Water Street Brewing company (Which is mostly 21+) are about the 2 best run venues in town, and have featured some great shows/brewfests over the past 2 months. 10 bands, at 100 bucks a month for rehearsal space =.... The Upside in PA has a “for rent” sign in the window. Matt tells us that with another business to run, his desire to spend a weekend with his wife for a change, a new recording studio, and other life challenges, he has decided to put his time into promoting larger shows in PA about once a month, the first of which might be an Inkreats CD release show in April (we hear you can win a date with Josh if you suggest a cool new name for the band). with The Nihilists, DEK and others. Kyle, Matt, Marty and everyone else at the venue deserve a big cheer for what they have accomplished with the Upside, and we look forward to a great show with Agent Apathy on Saturday March 11th (THIS WEEKEND) and one of the new PT bands making noise,Captain Incognito. So what’s a punk to do?... While we wait for the potential of a Hadlock venue and some other things to pop up show-wise in and around PT, we suggest ROAD TRIPS! The last big Legion Hall show featured the amazing Phenomenauts back in Dec. The band returns to the Pacific Northwest on April 8th in an all ages show at Hells Kitchen in Tacoma. About 8 blocks away at the dome, Fallout Boy, Hawthorne Heights, and All American Rejects can offer up the late night appetizer in a cool night of rock, although we would rather see the Nuats at t he Dome and the Boys at the Kitchen. March 25th sees Style Eand Fro-zen Fresh at he Water Street Brewing Company. Seems like Brett from Waiting for the Sun/Sepsis has made it to the next round of one of those “Idol” type shows on King 5 I think. We will let you know when you can catch him on the boob-tube, as that might be a good reason to watch TV. If he wins, he gets a trip to the Grammies where he has promised to tackle the nearest star-rapper to the ground screaming “I will avenge the Warrior!” The Skatepark is dying to be skated!.... Some great threadson the shedboard with pictures and all that, courtesy of Carson, Jim and others who are sooo stoked to skate this monster that Dreamland has built for us, which the city says won’t be open till May because of “sidewalk building”. There are words of some sort of grand opening, and we certainly favor making it a skate/music thang (FYI/newsflash to city...Skating and punk rock music go hand in hand), but congrats to everyone! through all the hassle and bickering, a great park will be yours soon. Kitsap has a severe buzz going around a venue called the Tiki House and a bunch of bands that are making noise, notably The Helen Killers (with former members of Bad Otis), the very cool Mos Generatorand a band that played a short set in PT last year, Valley of the Dinosaurs. If you are jonesing for that cool club show, looks like Kitsap has the venues and bands to feed your need. Our Heros and Zeros rant is back. Our Zero for this month include Seahawks owner and mega-rich mo-fo Paul Allen. We looked it up, and the 11th man on the hawks roster made about a million dollars last year. We figured that instead of letting Steeler Fans invade the stadium like Dick Cheney trying to get a duck dinner, our super-rich potential-hero would invest say $900,000 (what a 12th man would cost if he paid us) in some seats for normal Hawks fans to come to the big dance. The hero for this month is everyone of you who have dropped us a line, posted a cool addition to the message board or stopped us in the store to say that you missed this misguided bit of attitude in a sea of the “can’t we say we get along and not” vibe that prevails. We promise to continue to support what rocks, and diss what’s lame. The Myspace Site of the month this month is from one of those much talked about new bands from PT, Captain Incognito, who will be playing March 18th at the Upside. Also, City of Armadillo, a band that we always wished would play PT gets a nod as well. The Fan Site of the Month is Photog and the biggest metal fan on the Peninsula, Kyle (The guy lives and breaths it). and Justin, who donates his time to run the Upsides MySpace board. We know we are forgetting some band links and other things that should be here, so let us here it.
December 28th, 05 - As you can see, we have changed some stuff, and added a lot while trying to keep the site look the same. Whatever huh? We will give you a little tour, but first...The news to use. Promoter = 10 more blood pressure points...Matias promoted his first show at the Boiler Room with PTs Inkreats and the very cool Patterns from Kitsap. No suprize to us that the show drew 2 times more than the 36 and a half capacity at the venue, but it prompted the BR to send the young promoter this. That led to more discussion out of anger/thought on our irreverent message board and bottom line... The BR will be hosting at least one more Matias-promoted show on Friday, Jan 27th with The Trophy Wives, and are going to work that line between providing shows for all the kids, (including the lovable punks who are the base of our readership IE, you), and appeasing a community that would rather have them as “quiet” as possible. We won’t boar you with the internal politics that have always gone along with the promoters job in booking shows (anywhere), as that is detailed in many posts on the board. We will say this. If the BR supports the “kids” in a way that helps provide the majority of them with good shows, jobs programs that work, you know...the things that a group that got something like $50,000 in the last year, and will need much more to survive in 06 should do, then get involved. Help out, and take advantage of the facilities and passion that they have obviously put into the place during construction. If you see it not going down that way...tell them and the people that write checks to them that its not happening. Its not very “PT” to be this confrontational, we know. But we have found that with severe waste in everything from Hurricane relief to other expensive “non profits” both locally and nationally not cutting the muster, you wont find this little engine sitting back while people who are supposed to get help and good programs for their money are ignored. We know that there are many outstanding programs (JC Mash and the Vera are 2 we like), but remember, most of those televagelist dudes you see on late night TV are “non-profits” as well. If someone takes your money, hold them accountable. Team rock...Looks like Dan and Matias will be promoting heck of a show at the Rec Center uptown on February 17th with the Hollowpoints who will be getting back from a string of dates to California and back, The Nihilists, Agent Apathy, and the Untouchables (Not the big Ska band for you old skoolers) . Many of you know, some of the coolest shows of 05 were held at the venue, including a great Common Hereos/Nihilist affair that was off the hook. Stay tuned, and we will let you know more as we get closer. DJ, Gimme a beat... DJ Style E has 2 club shows coming up. Feb 3rd at Efra's "MAD MAX" B-Day party @ the Water St. Brewery which should be nuts, and Feb 4 at Sirens. West by Nothwest...Some VERY cool shows coming to the Upside in PA. Besides the Schoolyard show, the venue will be bringing back some great bands including the Divorce and MIP. A good show just about every weekend at the venue, which also released its comp, featuring a great group of bands. Art..Rock...Huh? We had an idea to get together all the cool artwork that goes along with the shows like t-shirts, posters, photography, video and other stuff and Jim has agreed to put on an art/rock show in Feb.. He is talking with some venues, and the show will probably feature a performance form a “newer band, and an “older” one. Should be a cool event, and a great chance to complete the old poster collection. Jim has also posted a clip from a Waiting for the SunHalloween show, and has a TON of other great video, and is planning on releasing a DVD that will be at the show. All this, and it looks like some great photography and artwork by Len, Kyle, and others will make this a phat event. A Shedboyz site for old people...I have decided to add a site called the PT Music Museum. It will be a work in progress, and take some time to fully put together, but you can check out the beginnings. The Kids in the Hall...We are working on a live CD of live tracks recorded over the years at the Legion Hall. Might be a while, but we thought we would let you know its a plan. We thought the walkman was a good idea too... I remember when we told a member of the Chamber in 97 that flash websites, “visitor integration” and message boards were the future of the web. The response we got was that all this “new-fangeled” technology would never work. Uh-huh. In any case, as far as we know, the first Podcast and radio show (kind of) on the Olympic Peninsula can be found right here (Well, kind of. We are still working on the Podcast part). Its courtesy of Dakotah, who sent us an interview with The Trophy Wives, mixed in with some cool tracks from the Nihilist and others. You can always check out the latest interviews we will be posting, and eventually the PodCast, at the “”ShedRadio link at the top. Heroes of the month include the 16 year old kid who took a vacation to Baghdad. Finally, someone is trying to go somewhere other than Europe or Cabo. Zeros include his parents, (who looked super-rich), for not flying him first class with some damm security. The Myspace Site of the month this month is from Tyler Reid. Folk seems to be the title that a lot of people are hanging on his music, but it’s still loud in our book. Well-crafted songs and a few local shows have kept him busy, and busy in this town is amazing. The Fan Site of the Month is Heartbreak. Her groups list, including the ever funny “I Work (Or Used Too) At McDonalds! And It Sucks!” is worth the visit alone. Have a better 06 than 05, Regular updates at least every 2 weeks. We know we are forgetting some band links and other things that should be here, so let us here it.
Thanksgiving, 05 - Lots going on, so lets get started with the news that brings it all together. Pho-nominal.... The Phenomenauts/DEK show was all that and more. One of the best Psyco-billy bands in the nation, and just downright fun. Big props to Dan and Mike from DEK for bringing such a rad show to town. Click here for the pictures courstey of Katie. Great gigs coming up. Of course there is the Vendetta Red/Schoolyard Heroes show in PA at the Olympic Skate Park tonight (Sat the 26th) should be amazing, and with the 3 inches of Blood/Dead Whore River show on Tuesday the 29th at the Upside, the boys in PA are hitting it pretty hard. This Sunday, Nov 27th at Studio Seven in Seattle, The Trophy Wives will be playing a battle of the bands, and could use some old fashion PT backup. now is the time to catch their great live show in a cool venue if you haven’t already. Will from Axes of Evil says that if the Hollowpoints tour with another guitarist in Europe, it won’t be him, but Gonz from The Angry Amputees. We also got it wrong when we said that the Inkreats have a new member. They are working with some new guitarists, but it will be January before they make a decision. The band also will be hitting the Blue Room studios in PA to record their debut EP to come out in the late winter. Where-ever that is...Shotgun Kisses plays Dec 3rd at the High School in Chimacompton, WA . We would tell you more, but they are REAL quiet. Club Waterworld update...Yep, the Surf is indeed closed for a while as it floated out a little more to sea. 21 Plus stuff...Seems like those funky dancing fools that used to hobbit the place knowen as the Surf are doing the running man at The Roadhouse now, which makes for a great floor show while I eat my steak. Rumor also has it that some rock and roll was going to go down at the Surf before it lurched toward the water, and that those efforts might just be happening at the Roadhouse soon. The Boiler Room seems to be getting closer to completion, and they have posted some part time jobs that they need filling. One of um is helping to book shows and events. Now is a good time as any...all you young promoters. Sorry we missed Efra and Style E’s PJ Party. I had my Playboy satins ready. The Upside comp is out, but only 100 will be on sale at the Vendetta show, more by the 1st week of December we are told. Quimper Sound is has launched a web store that is super easy to use, and definitely the biggest on line shopping portal that we can think of for a retail store in town. Great to see a local business do something cool on the web. We know that they are more expensive than a used copy on ebay, but support these guys when you can. They have a great local music section, and help a ton of promoters and bands sell tickets in town for free. Before you have to read to many of the son to come “Lists/Best ofs” that will no doubt fill the media in the next month...we chirp up with The Sheddies. It’s our local list of what we feel made the grade in this interesting year. Hear we go.
· · Best after show food. Well...for one show, it was the Underdog hot dog cart. But the bastards got us hooked and then bailed because of a broken wheel. This would make our choice the “show-sub” as we call it. You know. One of those 3 foot 2 inch subs from Safeway that have been sitting in the case all day for $3.99. If you want um, you gotta get there before 2AM.
- · · Best Death-defying antic.
- · · Best show - Hands down, it was the Brett Pemberton promoted, Chinatown, Aiden, Nihilist, Schoolyard Heroes, Hollwpoints in January. Be a long time before a top to bottom show that good will be here again.
- · · Best Out of Town Band - My vote is for DEK not just for what they did onstage, but off. Many don’t know this, but they are responsible for bringing The Briggs, Angel City Outcasts, Phnomanots, and others to town, when none of these bands would have come to our dusty hamlet without their help.
- · · Person of the Year - Promoter/Libido frontman Dan Demay. The last 7 months of shows would not have happened without him Zero, Skyler, Dakotah and a host of others. DJ Style E. Been to every show with his lights and help, even though rock isen’t his main gig, he supports, and is INVOLVED. Special props to his lifetime ride Anna, (and mine Katie) for rocking so hard
- · · Shedboard topic of the year. - Dirty Whore, No Talent. Unexplainable.
- · · Worst Shedboard Topic of the Year...Ditto. See above
- · Fan of the Year - Its a tie. We agree.
- · · Band most likely to actually make money playing music for a living - Shotgun Kisses. They may play a lot of covers, but there are a lot of bands that make $1000 a night playing covers, so don’t laugh. Besides...they rock at it.
- · · Most Improved Band - The Inkreats. These guys will get scarry-good in 06.
- · · Band we wish would have stayed together - Lunatic Fringe.
- · · Local Band of the Year - The Nihilist. They have improved every show, and now put on one of the best around and recorded a great debut CD. To top it off, like those that have come before them, they have helped promote shows and encourage new bands.
- · · Local MySpace Site of the Year - Missionary Mercenary and PT Local Music
- · · Words that need to go away. Rock and Punk. Till then, we will be here.
Nov 14th, 2006 - Another great show at the Hall this Friday, and 2 amazing new shows courtesy of the Upside, and all the scuttle-but you come to expect from us fill this update. Club Waterworld?... Seems like the Surf has a sign on the door saying they will be closed for 6 months after the club decided to move a foot or so away from mother earth. We heard that the venue was to host Style E on Friday, and had asked Dan to possibly book some rock bands in the club. See...venues crumble at just the thought of any serious rock. New Inkreat anyone? The catchy punk band continues to fine tune its brand of mayhem, threatening to add a guitar player to the mix. They just keep getting better, and this should really fill out an already big sound. Speaking of side players. Seems like the guitarist for Axes of Evil will more than likely be joining the Hollowpoints on their European Tour in 06. We hear that former Waiting for the Sun members Neil and Brett are playing music together and are recording some stuff in anticipation of a yet unnamed project. Don’t even know his name yet, but we do know that the new Hard Candy drummer has been on the road most of the summer with a “touring band”, and is the missing link that the band has been looking for. You can see for yourself on Friday as they open the 4-band bill at the Legion Hall. Another addition/change sees the Sadie Hawkins Rejects out...the Teenage Harlets from Oakland, CA are in as the 2nd band of the night. From EVERYTHING we hear, the Phenomenauts are amazing, and we all know that DEK is a fun time. 7PM start...and we will see ya there. You can save a buck day of show and get a cool collectable pass if you go to Quimper Sound on Thursday or Friday and buy an advance ticket. Two MONSTER shows via the gang at the Ppside at sure to help you digest your turkey as Saturday the 26th has Vendetta Red, Schoolyard Heroes and the Assignment at the Olympic Skate Center in PA. Tuesday the 29th at the Upside will be the best metal bill in a long time as the venue hosts 3 Inches of Blood and Dead Whore River. All praise to the guys at the “cide” for bringing these incredible shows to the area. We don’t know how we are gonna do it yet...but the 1st “Sheddies” will happen right here. It will be one of those dumb awards-type things for the local music goings on. We also will be adding a feature brought to you by Steve from Quimper Sound where he will let us know the new Rock/Punk releases for the week and we will post them on the front page. Lots of cool things coming up with the site...so be patient dammit. We are taking a break from the MySpace site of the week and Heroes and Zeros, as I constantly have to watch the turkey which needs to bast for 22 days according to my grandmas ancient recipe. Ciao until later this week.

October 31st, 2005 - 3 big shows, and a handful of new ones to cover in this edition of the news that drives your homework schedule wiggy. So grab a coffee, and look at it as “reading practice”. Night one of the Halloween bash started with Minor Imperfection. We didn’t know it, but it seems that this band was one of the bigger ones from Port Angeles a while back, and we just getting back into doing some shows. If they have taken time off, you wouldn’t know it as the band rocked the 1 slot hard, and made fans. Next was Hard Candy. Isaha is a guitarist that can be described as “tasty” with a vocal quality that fits the songs they are writing nicely, and the return of Adam from Libido was great. Dan playing drums really doesn’t work for some of us, and the show was way less impressive than other outings when he fronted the band. We will say that the songs are cool as hell, and Issah did a great job holding down the front line in only the bands 2nd show (I think). The Super cool Bad Otis was next. Can’t stop thinking about how this polite mild mannered-looking bunch, rock with passion and take on another persona on-stage that is a half-fun, half-heavy, and an all-cool show. Next up was a band that kind of started the current wave of out of town bands playing the hall when they played the bash in 2002, Alien Crime Syndicate. Striped down to a 3 piece, the band showed big classic rock riffs and well crafted songs always make for a great show. Especially since this band doesn’t play out much anymore, it was great to see them tear it up once more in a way that only a band that has been around the block a few times can. Look for a possable new record and several side projects for the boys in ACS in the future. The Nihilist took the stage to the theme from The Good, The Bad and The Ugly looking like bloody Men in Black, and immediately ripped into a new song that is possibly their best yet. When a band gets to a point that each new song they write, takes them to a new level... you know they are on the right track. The Nihilist are a band whose time has arrived. While not plowing “new” territory, strong song writing and a powerful stage show are indications that when this band hits the Seattle clubs, they will continue to win over fans hearts, and their is a damm good reason. With the football game not a factor, Saturday drew a better crowd of about 220 with Shotgun Kisses opening the show. The most common comment you hear about this band is the they “sound” great. With songs that are popier than their local counterparts, and a guitar player that is probably the best classic rock type of player in town, they draw comparisons to The Cars with Dominic’s Rikk Ocasic like voice and other classic rock outfits like Cheap Trick and the Darkness, but in a more serious way. Bottom line is that this band will get tagged with the dastardly “commercial” or “poppy” title, but that only means that they are great at what they do, and deserving of their fans attention. Next up was The Inkreats. Wow...for a band that is a little less than a year old, they once more put on a great show. The fans love um, and the songs they are writing, while paying some homage to the Points, The Nihilists and other local bands, are blazing a new trail that sounds like only them. It’s real scary to think how good this band is going to be by the time they are seniors in high school because they are starting to seriously rock now. Next up were Bellingham’s Axes of Evil The one thing a band that has played a tour or two has is that “swagger” and power to their show that a band lacking that experience sometime doesn’t posses. AoE is like bringing a little of the Funhouse (the older punk club in Seattle) to the Hall. Like watching a freight train with no brakes, and great to have them back for the 2nd year of the bash. Dead Whore River followed. They probably would have drawn a better crowd if they hadn’t played the Upside the previous night, but for what crowd they had, and those who hadn’t seen them before, they did bring a heavy taste of old-school metal to the proceedings. Sounding to me a little bit like the best of Testament, with awesome duel guitar work, and a splash of Hatebreed...mabye even some Dream Theater since they really do know how to play. Their is no doubt that if you listen to these guys, they are the best band to come out of the Peninsula that plays on the heavier side of metal, and a joy to see someone who rips up a double kick drum again. Their “dancer” Donna even walked away with the best costume award beating out a super dejected banana for the Aiden Tickets (The Warrior was missed by everyone). Check the Upsides website for info on what will be an awesome show with them and 3 inches of blood later in the month in Sequim. The Trophy Wives closed the 05 Bash with what I feel was an inspired performance. Originally scheduled to play earlier in the evening (DWR...you owe them one), a lot of folks stuck around late, and were rewarded with in my oppion, the best performance by a frontman in years at the hall. Singer Dan donned a guitar with the band for the first time. Half the joy was watching not only how much it thickened up their already fat sounding songs, but also how well he slug a guitar in a way that made an already energetic show, have one more dimension that is making this band unique, but comfortable like worn-in shoes. They straddle the line between not being so “indie” sounding that they don’t have hooks that stay in your head for hours, while not being like everything else. If I can say anything about this band, its that if they continue to get bigger shows like their opener for Hoddar on their home turf in Bremerton last month, they will be a band that gets plenty of notice for their live show (with or without the little gay dude). Next up was Sundays “Jerry Springer Ball” first up was the Love Doll Swingers which has Sam (former Libido bass player) on drums, Walter, and Usana followed by Sam switching to his native instrument for a set by the Jam-band oriented Girth with Zeke Wakefield on guitar. Sik Nicholas and Phonetics brought a funky mix of freestyle and cool beats. Look for some new releases out of Jabez and Nik’s camp in the near future, and check their respective MySpace sites for a taste of what’s to come. A cool hang for those hardcore enough for a Sunday party. Please...do it again.
For upcoming shows...there are several of note. The next Legion Hall show will be DEK with the Incredible psycobilly/punk of Oakland, California’s The Phenomenauts, The Sadie Hawkins Rejects from Seattle, and special guests TBD. Trust us...this show will put some glam back on the stage, and The Phenomenauts are currently on a tour playing dates with River City Rebels at Boston’s Avalon behind Fenway pahk, and a New York City date at the Knitting Factory. This show will rock your world with some amazing touring bands. A Pair of GREAT shows this weekend at the Upside as they are really putting things in gear now. Friday sees Neutral Boy, Oi Control, Prick & The Burn and Saturday has The Divorce, Mike Barnet (from L.A.), Niburu, Henkensiefken in a $10 show. These guys have some HUGE events coming up, and there is no excuse to not rock hard in November around here. Message/Shedboard log-in woes seem to plague some of you. We are working on a fix. Check the boards, and please let us know if you are having probs...or we won’t know. Speaking of not knowing, seems like The Inkreats didn’t even know that they were playing in the Bread & Roses courtyard?? with 3 other rock bands that have been described at “8th grade” bands today (Monday) at 4pm. If you are putting on a show...let us know so we can help promote it here, and most especially, let the bands that are playing know :) (The rain and thunder will probably stop this show as of this writing, 4 hours before show). A fun weekend for all, with more to come so stay tuned. The MySpace site of the week is PT Local Music, run by the anti-Barney Superstar himself. His gig guide and weekly updates are a lot of times more current then our own, and he is REALLY down for the bands and the fans. Sign up to his group, and participate ...please. Heroes for this week include everyone who held the PA and lights together for another show. Zero, Skyler, Dakotah, Dan, Matis rock, and make all you kids that show up 10 minutes before a show to “help” for a free pass, look dumb. Style E, for playing 3 shows in 3 nights in 2 venues also gets a hero nod, as well as Jesse, for taking dough out of his own pocket to promote a cool free show on a Sunday, and Nihilist guitarist Parker for melting his metal guitar parts (unintentionally) in a most awesome way. Rosa Parks as well. You can be barely 5 feet tall, and female...and change the world with courage. The ultimate hero for this week is my wife Katie. The 9 best years of my life...thank you. Zeros for the week include bands that switch time slots (OK...I am over it) Till next week...back to real homework.
Oct 23rd, 2005 - Me and Katie are done being mad that we missed the HorrorPops on Thursday, and The Inkreats at The Upside on Saturday (Someone let us know!) and we got 2 new shows to announce. Remember...the only way you can get a 2 day ticket to the Halloween bash is at Quimper Sound for $12. The first new show announcement is this Sunday, October 30th at the Legion Hall, and deserves an explanation of why you should go. There are several artists in town that haven’t played the Legion Hall shows as much as performances in 21 plus clubs or at the old Boiler Room. These bands generally are in the Rap (Sik Nikolas, Finius), and experimental/jam sounds (Boxcutter Hobos, Fenbi All Stars, Gypsy Joy Ride, Usana’s Love Doll Swingers) catagory. Many of those bands have always had ties to the bands that play the hall shows, sharing past members and playing occasional shows together. While not really being the “loud-type” of bands that normally play the Hall (the exceptions being DHOOM and The Gelding who take pride in the ability to “clear a room” on command faster than you can say “oi”) many of these bands will play a great show at the Hall put together by Parti-meister Jesse with the help of Spun Loud’s Dan and Style E. That makes 3 shows in a row at the Legion Hall this weekend. It’s billed as a “Jerry Spinger white trash costume party”, meaning most of us can come as we are. Its free, and by Invite only, but our faithful readership (you guys) can just say “I never cheated on you” at the door and your are in like a pole dancer at a bachelor party. The reason this show tickle’s our toes is that it will give a lot of great musicians a bigger stage than the postage stamps they normally play on. Amazing local guitarist Zeke Wakefield and former Libido member Sam Smith play in Girth, Jabez (STAbbINHObO), is adding to his personas with Phonetics, and Sik Nikolas will work the stage for the 2nd time in a month. Make sure you thank Jesse “Don’t lose that number” Rose for putting together this big showcase of talent that has done their thing in town for years, and giving them a cool show to play at. Check the poster, and we will see ya there. The other show announcement is the return of the ever-fun DEK to the Legion on November 18th with special guests. More details soon. A sad goodbye to Lori from the Legion Hall, as she has left the venue for other endeavors (including a possible club in PT). The plus in this is that she will now get to be a fan instead of having to work all the shows behind the bar and get to kick the kids buts in the pit like she always wanted to. I have heard about her in a Ministry pit, so I wouldn’t mess with it. The downside is that this is another nail in the coffin for yet another venue for hard rock in Port Townsend. The moral to the story is that Venues will always come and go... so enjoy each Legion show that happens. Kudos to the husband and wife team known as The Solvents who are playing some dates in France and one in New York City on the way back west. Former Circle of Fear Bassist Adam Burns has been cleared by “the boss” to make an appearance back with Hard Candy at the Halloween Bash. Besides our little get together at the Legion on Saturday, the Water Street Brewing Company Hosts Lucius Clay and DJ Style E in what will be the funk-your-rump show of the weekend. If you are stuck on the other side of the water this weekend, Friday at the El Corazon has a great show with The Briefs CD Release show and The Hollowpoints opening. The MySpace band site of the week comes to us from The Blakes, who played a Rec Center show in the Spring and are just getting into a tour that takes them on a dozen dates down to Arizona and back, hitting Sequim on Nov. 19th on the last date of the tour. The MySpace Fan site of the week is from drummer Andy. The Hero of the week is my best friend and sound tech (Coldplay, Pat Metheny) Sean who is visiting us from NYC in a week. Sean rates as a hero for having the best rock & roll tech story of anyone I know. He was 10 feet from the Tiger when it tried to eat “Roy” when he worked for the Vegas magic show “Sigfried & Roy”. If you see an Irish guy with 2-foot red hair at the shows this weekend, ask him...”word up wit the tiger?” The Zero of the week this time has to go to the City Council for wasting way too much time thinking about where an adult business in PT should be allowed to locate. We all know that no one has ever had (OK at least creditable) plans for bringing stripper poles and boobies back (they were already here once) to our Victorian hamlet. At least you guys were entertaining when wasting time on the chain store ordinence.
Oct 14th, 2005 - Time to announce the full line up for the Halloween Bash #5 at the Legion, but first...the news. If you think the fine bands that either come from here, or pass this way are not making big noise in the real world, you would be as wrong as your mom with Tommy Lee. Witness these far away, yet “close” examples of how far some of our super-hereos have gone. Aiden has a great review on Punk Globe On-line, and have stories in or soon to be in Revolver, Guitar Nine, Guitar World and MetalFest. The band is currently in England knocking them dead, and you can witness them giving a severe beatdown to Hawthorne Heights, Bayside, and Silversteen at the Showbox on November 2nd as part of that national tour. another example is me and the man with an H were having breakfast at the Crocodile in Seattle the other day, and he goes “did you see The Hollwpoints in that EMP brochure? (Experience Music Project...that ugly “museum” in the Seattle center). Sure enough...I get back to my ultra-posh Seattle base hotel and pick up one of those fu-fu tourist magazines. You know, the one that has all the sights to see and ad’s for art galleries that have stuff so stupid and expensive that you would never buy it even if you were rich. I come across and ad for the EMP and there it was... “Bennys But” as Katie said along with Matty on the EMP stage during the venues yearly wank-off/battle of the bands, the SoundOff. Now comes the funny part of the story. The day after that picture was taken about 2 years ago, Matty form the points and me waz talking about how they tried every way possible to lose the so-called “battle” the previous night, even resorting to calling the EMP several unflattering things from the stage. Matty was amazed that even with their efforts, they still won the nights “contest”. In any case...Paul Allen (Trailblazers/Seahawks/EMP owner and rich bastard), how about at least paying off the points van for the cool picture. One last thing Paul. If you want to give people a sense of what “rock” is and was about, send them over to the El Corazone or better yet, send all those tourist to a Legion Hall show. It will only cost about half as much as it is to get into your museum, and they will get the real thing. And now...more news about the bands we have come to love from our French Reporter Smelly Armpits. C'est votre correspondant français Puant. Nous entendons dire que les Hollowpoints jouent dans le Royaume-Uni et peut-être le reste de l'Europe en 2006. Pourquoi nous ne l'avons pas traduit dans l'anglais ? Nous avons juste voulu voir si vous vous soucieriez vraiment assez pour apprendre que tous ces moyens. Ayez un jour agréable. One thing we wanted to bring up as well is all the cool ways that people are getting involved. Zero, usually known for doing some stage tech work, designed the bash poster, and Self-inflicted has posted some cool pictures of the shows here. Also, several of you have formed cool MySpace groups like Matias’s PT Music Scene and Style E’s Underrated Underground. In any case, it’s time once more to thank all of you that follow the bands, are passionate about all the shows and for being involved. The lineup for the Halloween shows at the Legion Hall looks to be a great one. Friday the 28th will see The Nihilists, Alien Crime Syndicate, Bad Otis, Hard Candy, and Minor Imperfection. Saturday the 28th will feature Dead Whore River, The Trophy Wives, Axes of Evil, The Inkreats, and Shotgun Kisses. DJ Style E will spin both nights. Our way-cool 2-day collectable tickets/passes, (and only 100 of them), will be available starting on Tuesday and will be available ONLY at Quimper Sound for $12. It will be $7 each night, so get your pass a head of time to save enough for an Underdog at the show. Don’t forget the Costume contest. The winner each night will take away 2 tickets to the Aiden/Hawthorne Heights gig at the Showbox in Seattle on November 2nd! All you have to do is show up in your creepiest (OK...cute will do as well) best at one of the Halloween shows and we will select the finalist to hit the stage. Best audience applause wins. Shows for this upcoming weekend include A Midnight Octave and Goodspeed at the Upside. They are also working on a Vendetta Red, Schoolyard Heroes bill that should be amazing sometime in November. The MySpace site of the week comes to us from The Evil brothers and Axes of Evil. The Fan site of the the week is from Samikx. Make fun of him till he comes home. The Hero of the week is our friends at www.ptguide.com . A cool local site that takes a ton of work each week to put together. Also in the Hero category is Former Waiting for the Sun Bassist Casey Greenspane who is spreading his wings down south for the winter. One of the best “Souls” I know. Travel safe. The Zero of the week will take up some space. I really do try to keep politics out of this music-based site...but rock and politics go so well together, and I promise this will be my last rant on this man in this space. The Zero is George Bush, and I just want to have a chat with you. You know, one of those honest moments like a fireside chat. Don’t get too bent out of shape George, because I am just saying this because I think that you need to take a break. Lets recap the last few years first. When you got elected, you gave all the rich a tax cut in the hopes that they would use that extra cash and hire some people and propel the economy. When that failed, you started raiding the surplus that Clinton left you with, spending over 150 Billion of it in the first six months of your administration. Then 911 happened. You stood on the rubble and said you would get the people responsible. You attacked the right one first (Afghanistan), but failed to finish the job and in a great PR move, convinced everyone (at least south of Minneapolis) that it was really Sadam that was the bain of everything wrong with the world. How you can be in the oil business and pull that off was just brilliant. You had to have help with that one. So anyhow... You even convinced all these poor military families that you were “pro-military”. We both know if you were, then you would want them home where they belong. The Iraq war has remained a nice excuse for the economy sputtering while the deficit blows. Real cool lines like “Housing starts are at record levels” were pure genius when you look at the fact that because of population, housing starts have gone up at “record levels” each year for 107 years. Your 2nd term was earn easy enough by just convincing the majority of Christens that God was a Republican. You were coasting along, able to take plenty of 2 month vacations to your ranch in Texas, all while still running the world, and then Katrina hit. At that moment, it probably pissed you off that you didn’t hire anyone with any experience to run FEMA, or do any of the national disaster planning you said you were doing since 911. So now, you are reduced to your worst nightmare...helping poor people. It kind of helps that they are from the south so you can continue to keep them thinking that you care and that your going to actually do something for them. But really George, you haven’t had a vacation in almost 8 weeks. The longest you have gone without hitting the ranch or camp David during your administration is a little more than 4 months. You must be super tired bro. I tell ya what....We got it from here. Take a break. Maybe your just not very good at this president thing. Just think, you can ride your horse all day and not have to worry about all this complicated running the country stuff. We got a great team just waiting to take over. Dan and Dakotah have volunteered to start rebuilding bars in New Orleans one-by-one till they get done. Althya is ready to educate all those poor people on how to eat on 32 cents a day. Brett is already in Italy making sure the Italians and French will stay pissed off at us, and the Iraq thing? We will just bring our fellow Americans home (is Thursday good for you?), and send all the money that Halliburton and Exxon has made during your presidency to the best people Iraq has to offer. Let them rebuild their own country to their liking.. So whadda ya think? I say it could work. See you at the Bash (not you George), and stay cool.
Oct 1st, 2005 - First off...a HUGE congrats and thank you to The Upside who will be celebrating their 1st Anniversary tonight at the club with Wingman Down, A Void and Indecisive Rhythm. More importantly, let them know that you appreciate their hard work in being the only regular club on the Olympic Peninsula that supports heavy music. To Matt, Marty, Kyle, Wayne and the bands that tear the joint up...THANK YOU. Stay tuned for the Upside Comp, with a sweet selection of local bands coming out soon. In my never ending endeavor to see how much you guys can make me laugh...time for a CONTEST! With Halloween approaching, I am all done watching as kids put on a trash bags to qualify for a $1 discount at the door. This year, we will have an old school costume contest with the winner taking away 2 tickets to the Aiden/Hawthorne Heights gig at the Showbox in Seattle on November 1st! All you have to do is show up in your creepiest best at one of the Halloween shows and we will select the finalist to hit the stage. Best audience applause wins, and don’t even think of showing up in a trash bag. Same contest each night, so two chances to win. The MySpace sites of the week include Aiden’s. The band releases it’s new CD, Nightmare Anatomy on Tuesday. Pick it up at Quimper. The Fan Site of the week is the ever lovable Amy from Hadlock, who will no doubt be celebrating her birthday (the 28th) at the hall in rocking fashion. Heroes for this week include The Upside for being just that cool. Zeros for this week include Waterfront Pizza dude and guitarist TY, who has plans to move on to cali before we get to see what kind of band he could put together. We will miss you and your talent. Travel safe. The complete lineup for the Bash in the next update.
Sept 29th, 2005 - A short update this time as tons of things eating up time are invading the shed. First off...Thanks to Style E for putting on the first dance/hip hop at the hall in 3 years. Sikk Nikk proved he can get a crowd thumping, and Dig Dug tow-up Sirens in the 21 plus festivities. You can check out Dug tonight (Thursday) opening for Carl Cox at the Showbox. We have more announcements coming up for the Halloween shows. Check below to see who has already been announced ...but we have some cool things up our sleeve for the 2 nights of goulish fun. Even if you think you know what is up with the line-up....you don’t, so stay tuned! This weekend, you can participate in the favorite past time of the 21 plus crowd in PT and be mediocre as hell as the Kinetics’ ball comes to the Legion. They have had good bands play in the past, but have concentrated on decorations and the Krowning of the Kween thing of late. One thing is for sure...you can see a lot of the upstanding community sloshed to the point of stupider than normal at this function, which makes it worth the price alone. The Upside will be having about a show a week while it prepares for the release of it comp, then back to shows every weekend in the near future. No show this week that we know of...but if you look for rock, yee shall find. More over the weekend.
Sept 21st, 2005 - This weeks update is all about thumpin your rump, as Style E brings an all ages rave to the Legion Hall this Friday, with one of the best Break-beat Dj’s in the world, DJ Dig-Dug. A 2nd 21+ show on the same night will happen at Sirens with slightly different openers. Think of the largest dance club on the peninsula for one night and you will get the idea. $5 at the door. Halloween is fast approaching. Time for the 5th annual Halloween Bash. Dan & Dakotah have announced the headliners for the 2 nights of scarry evil at the Legion Hall. Night one on Friday, October 28th will feature CO-headliners The Nihilists, and a band that played the 2001 Bash, Alien Crime Syndicate. The next night, the festivities will get way heavy with the duo of PA’s Dead Whore River (DWR), with new guitarist is tow, and the Trophy Wives. Opening bands will be announced in about a week (and even those will blow your mind)...so stay tuned all you scary children. How long does it take to boil water?...For those of you wondering what is up with the Boiler Room, it has been kind of hard to find out, since the Leader hasn’t really done a “what’sup” on them in a month or so, and the organizations web site is not really updated or done. Here is what we think we know (You never can tell). We heard that they got the dough together for the down payment. 50 K or something like that, and then the health department went “You can’t serve food here” denoting plumbing and other issues. The adults went back to the owners and said “Hey...you sold us a building that we can’t serve food in”. The outcome we hear was a severely reduced price, and a little wait while they get the space done and up to code, but they are getting closer to opening the new one each day. Slightly (an understatement) longer on the “wait” list has been the PT Skate Park. With a score of kids who started out being involved as freshmen and graduating 4 years later while the city studied the project to the point that the $300,000 grant for the thing was soon to expire if they didn’t build SOMETHING. Not quite on the scale of the tide-e-bowl (that concre te thing next to the pope marine building) on the level of incompetence, but still, many soon got frustrated with participating in a process that was full of bureaucratic BS to the point that we don’t know of a single kid that managed to torture themselves in front of the city long enough to see it to compleation...and we don’t blame them. We do congratulate those that through the years did participate in the process, especially OS (original shedboy) Jim for dealing with city hall and being one of a few helping get ANY park built before they lost the grant to build it. Ground has officially been broken for the park, which will be built by Dreamland Skateparks. We heard that the PT Kids were in full effect at the El Off-Rampo in Seattle for the Unseen show. 3 cheers for god...Saturday at Memorial Field sees a “Christian” rock show with Soul Deep, Future Glory and Out of Mouth. Show starts at 1PM. I was going to write a letter to the Leader, but thought, wait...I gotta web site....There has been talk about putting a 10-20 percent “Admissions Tax” on all entertainment events, including clubs and Legion Hall shows. There is a public comment in front of the city council next week, but rather than waste my time on those bozo’s, we will just offer up that the promoters of events and people who run the clubs in this town work very hard and spend a lot of money on making sure their in-house services are effective, with no complaints. If you truly want to detour the costs to the city for the events you are referring to, then you must look to the events that create the situation you speak of, and not lump everyone in the same category as needing any services from the city to run their shows. Outdoor events at Memorial Field, Parades, Centrum events and the Wooden boat festival take more resources up in a day than it takes in city effort to provide anything to independent promoters and nightclubs. Please...at least one of the creepy bastards in government get a clue. Last week, one of the cool sites we sent you all too was the talented Daryl (ReminiscentScreams). She was so siked that she has posted a place for her local band pictures that will be posted here. Now you really do have to update it :) You heard it here first. Severe slow downs at MySpace.com has the wheels in my head thinking that it’s time might be borrowed. In fact, success nearly toppled the company in 2001. Lets see...if everything goes as planned, they will start asking for $19.95 a year, we will all tell them to suck a duck, and thousands of band files will become unavailable. Our MySpace site of the week is K I Double P. Love fans of local music. The other, is our friend and Waiting for the Sun co-founder BO. He has some cool new material up from his semi-new digs in Santa Cruz. Heroes for this week - Patti LaBelle. Not only “the only” Diva talent-wise, but also is such a good soul that she makes all those lip-service do-gooders and “vibe” people look like the clowns they are. The (closing) Palindrome for providing a cool place for a certain segment of the music community. You will be missed. Dakotah for getting to hang with a smelly Duane Peters (Hunns, US Bombs) and the Hollowpoints at a show in San Francisco. Zeros this week (and forever in fact) include Exxon...the worlds richest company.
Sept. 10th, 2005 - Once more...that was fun. Even though they had the smallest crowd watching them, The Last Goodbye’s set at the back to school show was something to talk about. First off, re-introductions. Drummer Neil was with Waiting for the Sun, Alan was with Visqueen, and Roisin toured the world with 7 Year Bitch. Alan apparently has little respect for vintage gear, and the “Best Ball” since the bowling alley closed, rolling himself into Roisin’s bass stack, and into The Inkreats backline. Made for good fun watching myself and Josh screech at the possibilities of more destroyed gear than our brains could deal with. I guess he figured that since she was leaving the band after this show anyhow, he would take out some gear :). All in fun, and Alan came away with more war wounds to add to the collection. Someone’s always getting hurt in that band anyway. The Inkreats headlined with a great set. Probably the best in their short existence. The same could be said for the Shotgun Kisses. The Guns pulled even more covers out of the closest than previous shows, throwing down Crue riffs, some Van Halen, and showcasing that yep...they do have one of the best young guitarists in the area. The show was opened by our favorite misfits from Hadlock in the form of the Dan DeMay side project, 5th of Hadlock. Pulling out material from Libido and some new tunes that showed the maturity in his songwriting, Dan lead his band through a great set of rock that was raw, and made up for any lack of tightness with some good ol fun. All in all...a great show, and we thank all of you for coming out. The next event at the Hall will be the Style E produced DUEL. He is going to deck the Legion Hall out with the coolest lights and sound that we have, and the headliner will be the much-traveled DJ DIG-DUG. Other artist’s appearing at this all ages Rave will be Style E, and the Return of Sic Nik for this all ages show. The same artist will appear the same night at Sirens in an over 21 show. We promise that the Legion Hall will look dope (is that still cool slang?) and that DIG-DUG will definitely throw down a party. If you want a preview of the upcoming Upside comp, The Nihilists have posted a song that Marty engineered at the venue a week back. Check it out here. A Sure sign that rock/pop music is OVER. Hamburger giant McDonald’s is hoping to name-drop the Big Mac brand into hip-hop and rock lyrics. The fast-food chain is offering rappers up to $5 every time a song mentioning its most famous product is played on the radio. The company, along with the Gap, Hot topic, and others have reportedly offered Green Day and several other artist six figures to insert a lyric into one of their songs. The lesson? Its not impossible, but getting harder and harder to find bands, record label’s, managers, promoters and others who have a clue about anything but marketing and money. Rock is truly dead, but while we wait for what is next from the basements of the world, the best way to find real music with real passion is in the smelly clubs and legion halls around the country. That said...the next person who e-mails me with a new band, ready to go without a name, I will post a free ad for you on eBay selling the opportunity for your band to be named whatever the highest bidder wants to name it. Don’t laugh. A lady from Tennessee just got $5000 when she sold the rights to changed her name to online casino GoldenPalace.com. We have been trying to find a way to give to the victims of the New Orleans tragedy in a little more personal way that watching BILLIONS of Government, FEMA and Red Cross money get wasted, and we think we found one. We have a friend in Texas named Erika Badu. She is a Grammy winning artist, and also owns a theater in Dallas. She is donating her theater and coordinating an effort that is worthy of your support. Beginning Saturday September 17th The Black Forest Theater will host ‘Scholastic Saturdays’ for 135 youths, ages 6 to 12, displaced by the devastation that struck the Gulf Coast region.. Children currently housed inside Reunion Arena and the Dallas Convention Center will receive tutoring, mentoring, counseling and educational guidance in what is a very turbulent time in these young lives. The program will run from 9am until 2pm, every Saturday, indefinitely. For more on how and what to donate, read this, and please help in a PERSONAL way. The MySpace site of the week goes to a pair of groups. PT Local Music run by Anti-Barney Superstar and PT Music Scene run by Matias. I have to also mention one of the Shedbord members site. All sorts of fun ramblings and great pictures from ReminiscentScreams in Ludlow. Great work on promoting the bands and shows in the area. Check them all out. Heroes for this week include Alan from the Last Goodbye for managing to toss his bass player/wife out of the band, screw up her amp, and still remain married. He must have a long weenie. Zero’s for this week include me for letting everyone out the wrong door to buy Underdogs. I will be kissing ass to the security team for a while.
Sept 7th, 2005 - Ahaa.. School is starting, the Hollowpoints have a “disagreement” with their current domicile owner making said housing “unavailable” right before a great tour with the Huns, and parking is becoming findable in downtown. It must be fall! Lot’s of news and stuff, but first...welcome back students. All of you freshmen who are intimidated by the upperclassmen, remember this. All things are equal in the pit, and the perfect time to start is this Friday’s show at the Hall. The final list for the Upside compilation looks awesome, with tracks from Stick Figure Strippers, Patterns, Wingman Down, Siatic, Soma, Red Band, Jack Havoc, Long Gone, Adios Pantalones, The Look, Contemplation, The Inkreats, Trophy Wives, D.E.K., D.W.R., The Assignment, Schoolyard Heroes, Valid Effort, Blackbelt, The P.C.P., Bad Otis, The Nihilists, Crustuhfur, and Downer Cow. You can maybe pick one up this weekend at the show if they are done. Done? Not hardly for the cool as hell DWR, but we do hear they will be auditioning guitarists. Don’t all it a comback...there is a new Madness of the North tune in cyber(MY)space to melt your brain. We smell comeback shows. In the “what good is a road story if you can never tell it” category, seems that Schoolyard Heroes was in Toronto Canada and got in a minor scuffle with a staff member of some sort that resulted in our heroes passports, ID and travelers checks getting tossed out the window of the hotel to the streets below. Trying to imagine Jonah and Ryann scurring about trying to pick up their stuff on a busy street. We heard that the Skate park opening with The Nihilists in Port Angeles was cool, but the show afterwards in the woods was better. Turned out to be some sort of a 2/3rd’s Lunatic Fringe/Nihilists affair with several noise complaint’s that rocked hard. A 5th of Hadlock will be drummer Eric’s last show before heading off to c ollege in Oregon. Huge news on the shows front. Many have always wanted to have regular rave/dance nights to go to that had cool lights and sound in a big room. Well...DJ Style E presents DUEL. Two shows, one all ages at the Legion Hall, and one 21+ at Sirens on Friday, the 23rd of this month. The shows headliner is one of the preemie breakbeat artists in the world, DJ Dig-Dug. Also appearing will be Style E, Sik Nikk, Greenhouse featuring Scoey, and others TBA. Heroes for this week include anyone who did do something timely and personal to help those poor people in the gulf states. William Hung for causing such a commotion on the shedboard a full 2 years after his “artistic” death. Zeros include charities and governments who spend more money raising money than doing what the hell they are supposed to and William Hung for causing such a commotion on the shedboard a full 2 years after his “artistic” death. See you this Friday.
Aug 29th, 2005 - I tried to count the number of times the Hollowpoints have played PT. Came up with 14 that I could think of, but this one might have been the best. The Trophy Wives have turned into a PT favorite, Agent Apathy proved that the wait for them to hit town was well worth it, with a fine set of Ska-Punk, and what can you say about Aiden other than they get a lot of our votes for band of the year honors. How a band can be so powerful, passionate and nice at the same time is a sight to behold, and they promise...they will be back. If you really want to say thank you and support um, they will hit the Showbox in Seattle on November 2nd opening the whole Hawthorne Heights tour. Must say...Victory Records has about the coolest roster of bands. If you are 21 plus, and anywhere near Seattle on Wednesday the 31st (Today), you should head to the legendary Funhouse near the needle to catch a great midweek show with The Hollowpoints, The Nihilists, and Axes of Evil, who will more than likely return to PT in October. DJ Style E is bringing a Rave into the Legion Hall for an all ages show AND Sirens on the same night with one of the coolest Seattle-based DJs, Dig Dug, on Saturday, September 24th. More info this weekend, but should be great. Speaking of this weekend... if you are in PT and 21+, the Legion is hosting a great Pop-rock band from Perth Australia, Dream Catcha. GREAT band and a cool free show. We have found a Kitsap show actually worthy of putting up with people from Kitsap County as the Trophy Wives Join the Schoolyard Heroes, Valley of the Dinosaur’s and the Joy Electric at the Roxy on Saturday. At The Upside this weekend Friday has Agent Apathy, The Untouchables and Autonomadic and Saturday sees The Inkreats and Glady's. The MySpace site of the week is Aiden’s. One of the better band ones out there. Drop by and tell them PT loves um. Heroes for this week are the door, stage and security people who ran the last show ...thank you! and those guys plucking people off the roofs in flooded New Orleans. Zero’s include all the people with cameras at the show who didn’t send me any pictures. Guess even free bumpershoot tickets can’t even do it.
The Fake Band Crq Roq in the Burger King Commercials. Why not just get Slipknot?
Aug. 20th, 2005 - As we await what will probably be one of the best shows of the year this Saturday, and a stellar lineup of shows out of town to check out on Friday, Parents and kids far and wide are driven to tears of joy/pain at the thought of school beginning. Lets rock! Dan/Spun Loud has announced a low dough back to school show on Sept 9th with The Shotgun Kisses, The Inkreats, The Last Goodbye, DJ Style E, and some old friends in a new package as former Libido members join up to perform as A 5th of Hadlock. Those cool pass/tickets that will save you a buck at the show this weekend are now at Quimper Sound and through a Spun Loud Rep for $5. A whole slew of things to do this Friday. If you are into a road trip, The Nihilists will play the Seattle Drum School with Agent Apathy. Sirens will be cool if your bad self is 21-plus as StyleE will throw a “Leo” party with special guests. The Upside on Friday has The Last Goodbye, Blackbelt, The Pharmacy and Valid Effort. Saturday brings in Siatic, Five Good Reasons, Prick And The Burn and the Redheaded Stepchildren. On Sunday the 28th, Orbit Audio/Joe/Alien Crime Syndicate will be throwing their 2nd annual BBQ at the El Corazon in Seattle with The Lonley H, ACS in their first show in about 6 months, and about a dozen other bands. Starts at 4pm in the afternoon, is all ages, and is $4. The Last Goodbye is recording some tunes while awaiting word on if drummer Neil will be hightailing it with the band to the “right” coast at the end of the year. It looks like the Nihilists have found a new home-base in Seattle. We would give you all the address, but we are sure that it has already replaced/complimented the “already solid” free/squater options at the Hollowpoints house. I got my toaster ready for the house-warming. The MySpace site of the week on the band side is Screw the Minisqkis . See if you can deal wit it playa...and turn on the sound. Heroes for this week are Agent Apathy and Aiden for coming to PT, and the folks who have all sent me messages that they will take some cool pictures for this show. DO IT! Send um on...and we will love you forever. Zeros for this week include...Nobody. Life is good. Enjoy it please, and we will see you Saturday.
Aug. 18th, 2005 - Touring, Touring, Touring...A lot of us have always felt that if the Hollowpoints (the new site looks GREAT) ever get the chance to get on a good tour that they would show the world how good they REALLY are. Well it looks like the band has just signed up to open a tour of the US with The Huns. The tour starts on Sept. 2nd in San Francisco and winds it’s way over to Chicago and the midwest. The tour hits the El Corazon in Seattle on Sept 4th. We also heard that the band recently shot a video that wasn’t much more than a wicked fun party with about 50 punks pogoing in a living room. Dying to see that. Damm...Aiden playing the Showbox...Dakotah racking up frequent roadie miles with the Points...Pretty cool indeed. Some new features on the Boyz this week to go along with Heroes and Zeros (See below). One is our MySpace site of the week. The company just sold for $580 million dollars, just going to show that if you give real people the power to build something, they will build it for someone else. So...as we all wait for our check for the content, our first MSSotW is Agent Apathy’s. Awww Screw it. We have to throw in a cool fan site too, so make sure to check out Amy’s rants and raves. A good weekend of shows at The Upside with Contemplation, Before Nightfalls and Self Induced on Friday, and Saturday brings D.W.R., The Letters Organize (Nitro Records) and Blackgoat. Heroes’ for this week include the dude who thought up the Foot Ferry to Seattle during the bridge closure. Would be nice if we could have that thing running all the time. Zuck for getting my guitar done by the 27th (Or it’s zero time buddy :), and Johnny Depp for being so damm good at what he does. Zeros this week include Tommy Lee for trying to get a collage education (Some people should just remain stupid) and the Sun. Go away already...and yes, I will bitch about it till it happens. See ya next week.
Aug. 14th, 2005 - For Budda’s sake...would the Aiden show hurry up and get here already. Just saw a short piece on the band in the latest Alternative Press, and they are in the middle of a tour with The Hurt Process from the UK, Junior Varsity and Chicago’s The Audition that is hitting clubs from Philadelphia to a stop this Wednesday (the 17th) at Hells Kitchen in Tacoma. Call in advance, as it will sell out. After the PT date, the band heads out on the road with Hawthorne Heights and Silverstein that will play mid-sized venues including the Showbox in Mid-October. Check these guys out on the 27th at the hall before you have to at the Key. Some news on the Halloween Bash front...It is all but confirmed that the Big HMW and Len will be back at this year’s 2-night bash with a fresh set of AK-47, and the possibly a tune or two from Len’s amazing Stardustsuperkill project. Speaking of that, Len is almost ready with a new site and a 32-page full-assed comic book that comes as a companion to the CD. More people moving to other pastures...A lot of you don’t know Brandy. She was one of the bartenders at the Legion, and has moved on to New Yawk. A hearty thanks for making sure the bands were as medicated as possible when needed and being a supporter of the rocks shows. Have fun in your new world.
Aug. 6th, 2005 - What a great show. Port Townsend fans were up for this one, even for a summer show, the pit was fun, and The Briggs and Angel City Outcasts say “thank you PT!”. A few of the highlights included The Outcasts great version of Motley Crue’s “kickstart my heart”, DEK showing that their first great show last spring was no fluke, and The Nihilists showing us all that they indeed are a band that can hold their own onstage with national touring bands. In fact, their set kicked ass, and along with the Outcast coming out REALLY strong, this was probably the best “musical” show at the hall since the Aiden/Chinatown show earlier in the year. The only downside was the traditional 400 people in the winter turns into 200 in the summer. Damm those vacationing swine, and come back soon. Fall is kind of creeping up, and with it comes kind of an end, and a beginning. The “end” part is that quite a few people that have been part of almost every rock/punk show in the last year are moving on to other pastures. Members of Lunatic Fringe, The Nihilists, Chris Gunn and The Low Ones, Josh Rambo and other non-musical supporters like Nihilist CD and T-shirt artist Cougar are moving out of the area. Like the Hollowpoints, they will be back, but in the meantime, we wish them all well in their new spaces. With people and things moving on, the “beginning” part is that Dan and Dakotah from Spun Loud have some great shows planned through the rest of the year, including the first New Years rock/punk show that I can remember in PT. Talks with them, The Legion, DJ Style E, and other supporters of the scene have also commenced to possibly have regular weekend shows and DJ’s in the downstairs of the Legion. Nothing is set in stone, but stay tuned. Speaking of shows.... Saturday the 13th at Quimper sound and you can say aidios to Chris Gunn who will be around from noon to four with "stuff" to eat and drink. Also don't miss his last local gig with his band the Low Ones at Sirens on Friday the 12th at 9pm. The next Legion Hall show will be a the much anticipated return of Aiden, who since their last show here has been on 2 European tours and a couple of loops around North America for good measure. Be prepared to be blown away. If that’s not enough, The Hollowpoints, Agent Apathy, and the Trophy Wives will be joining them. September 9th will see another Legion Hall show, with the bill still being worked out. The 4th annual ElmoFest that lost it’s home when the Boiler Room lost theirs, makes an appearance at the Upside next Saturday with Boxcutter Hobo, Dhoom, The Gospel St. Sinners, and solo acts by: Josh Lake, Big Momo, Bee, and others. Seattle’s Common Heroes has broken up after 5 years of toil which lead us to....Heroes for this week include Zero the stage tech for busting ass, the Sequim crew for making it to the show and Althea for coming up with even more cheap summer food sources. Hollywood video’s hours (midnight! 365 a year). Zeros include the Sun (for the 2nd week in a row), Former Hollowpoint and current Dreadful Children member/PT resident Ronnie who we saw Saturday night about 1AM in Safeway and when asked what was up that night, responded “The Briggs were in town tonight”? :)
Aug. 4th, 2005 - It’s show day! (Friday). Always a treat, and this one should be a doozzy. The Briggs Tour Manager told us that them and the Outcasts are indeed ready to rock PT, and their respective releases (the Briggs 3 song EP and The Angel City Outcasts super cool full CD) are really worth getting. Punk fun at it’s finest at the American Legion Hall tonight. Speaking of CD Releases. After much debate over weather train whistles sounded good on “The Game” or not, and the long court battle with Amtrak, The Nihilists CD “Sirens of Silence” is indeed done (I have actually seen one). Another good reason to bring some extra moola to the show. More, speaking of releases ...The Upside’s Comp will be VERY cool with The Schoolyard Heroes, The Nihilists, The Inkreats, The Trophy Wives, and other making for a much anticipated September release. The Upside also has a great show on Friday with the River City Rebels, Neutral Boy, Bad Otis and Oi Control for $10 and Saturday sees How The Mighty Have Fallen, Vole Mammoth and The Gelding for the traditional $5. Definitely one hell of a fat weekend for shows, so screw the sun...come out and play. The new Hot Dog cart that will be zooming around Water Street and Uptown for all your late night munchie needs has a new web site at www.PTUnderdog.com . Ummmm. Heroes for this week include The people of London, Little Steven Van Zant for trying to save the Legendary CBGB’s club in New York from losing it’s lease, My wife Katie (Happy 23rd birthday!), The Briggs in advance for not blowing up the PA. Zero’s include The Space Program, The Briggs in Advance if they blow up the PA.
July 20th, 2005 - Happy summer...but damm it’s hot. Someone asked me a while back if I thought that people knew how cool the Briggs show was going to be. Well I guess we will spell it out a bit. The Briggs and Angel City Outcasts are both from LA and have shared the stage with dozens of cool bands, as well as being veterans of both Warp and Vans tours. It’s an amazing show for our little town to get. If you need any more convincing, you would have to be a green tree frog not to know somethings up when the Nihilists and DEK are opening the show. Get there early...and if you don’t love this one, we can’t help you. All went well on the Nihilist/DEK mini-tour. Starvation, Wet nights in the cold, nutty fans and all the other things a good tour should be. The Seattle Drum School show was especially fun we have heard, and a hearty Thanks to the PA crowd for showing on a Thursday to rock the show at the Upside. One of our favorite people, Chris Gunn is leaving for different pastures. He is taking his warm soul to the equally warm Tucson, AZ (105 today...Jesus. Think about this man). Chris is one of those unique people that make a scene happen. A long time employee of Quimper Sound, his own recordings and live shows have touched people for years. What makes him special though is his unique ability to show genuine excitement for music and people. When you talked to Chris, you could just see him beaming as he talked about his next show or CD, and he was always equally interested in what was up with you as well. A champion of EVERYONE’S thing, a hole will be left in Port Townsend without him. We wish you well bro. Chris’s final shows (we think) are on the 21st (TONIGHT) at Sirens with a short set w/Mark Matos of Campo Bravo and Tucson band Rise & Fall Of Amy Rude and a complete show at Sirens on the 12th of Aug. Tonight (the 21st) also sees a benefit for the Boiler Room at the Pope Marine with Kimya Dawson, Jeff Lewis, Chris Maher, The Solvents and The Pharmacy. New and cool sites for this week include, DJ Style E’s MySpace site (who plays Aug. 26th at Sirens), and DWR , An incredible PA band that we hope to see in PT soon. I guess when Aiden was in Italy on a European tour, they pulled up to the venue and it was “Legione Americana Corridoio” which stands for The American Legion Hall. Guess it was near a military installation of some sort at one time. They hit the real one on Aug. 27th with The Trophy Wives added to an already great show. Tooting... Someone mentioned that we have the most active and largest message board in Jefferson and Clallam counties. Don’t know if it true or not, but thanks to all those who make it a fun part of the site. Feel free to post any gigs or info I might be missing. Our buddy Scoey is opening a mobile hot dog cart that will be a fixture on sidewalks near clubs and Legion Hall shows soon. He is calling it Underdog, and will feature hand dipped corndogs and other tasties. How cool...finding something in downtown after 10PM, and someone who takes a cool idea and runs with it. We hear that a show will happen around the opening of the new PA Skate park built by Dreamland. Check back for more info. Zeros for this week include the Sun, Heat, Ticket Prices for big shows. Heroes include air conditioning, and Dakotah for going to Dakota. I wish I could Vay-Cay to a state called Kit.
July 10th, 2005 - “Rock” to those who made it out for Hadlock Days. Can’t beat a flatbed truck in a parking lot and pissing off old people for a fun afternoon. Thanks to Toni C for letting loud music come to the festival for another year. Check out the pictures here. Shotgun Kisses even extended their habit for playing some covers with a version of The Cars “Just what I Needed” with guitarist Matt burning on the synth parts. DEK’s mini-tour with The Nihilists , Scatterbox and others in tow kicks off on Wednesday at the Seattle Drum School, on Thursday at a rare midweek show/CD release party at The Upside, and other shows. Of course, the bill hits the Legion Hall on Aug 5th with the Briggs and Angel City Outcasts. We heard that the caravan back from the Warped Tour was the real “zombie prom”. Heroes’ for this week include local poster artist Cougar, who is teaching English in Thailand for the summer, DEK for bringing a little bit of PT on tour with them, to other cool small town scenes like Arctic Zeros include for the 2nd week in a row... Alcohol. Yet another person that some of us know died over the weekend near 4 corners. Take a cab, get a sober friend, or don’t drive stupid.
July 3rd, 2005 - SO, I guess lesson #1 is, when a musician (like a Common Heroes guitar player) decides to fall backward off the stage...you ARE supposed to catch him. The show this Saturday was cool, and a great review that sums it up nicely is on the ShedBoard at this link). More on the show below. Pictures anyone?, because I obviously suck at it. A cool free show in a punk-rock parking lot happens this Saturday the 9th at the Kivley Center in Port Hadlock. Shotgun Kisses and The Inkreats will be taking the stage at 3PM. There will be a few food booths, and the usual crazy “small fair” contests, and The Inkreats new CD and T-shirts might be available at the show as well. We take it that all the “pit kids” were on vacation in Baja or something, as this Saturday’s show was way too tame, even though about 175 of you showed up. This “sitting in the back of the hall” stuff has got to stop, so the cooks in the kitchen have brewed up 2 shows that should definitely tickle your toes and get you to the front of the stage. The first one features 2 of the most heralded punk bands in the nation, The Briggs and The Angel City Outcasts, and 2 of the best local favorites in DEK and The Nihilists. Will be a great one, and it happens on August 5th with a limited number (100) of advance tickets for $5 at Quimper Sound. Speaking of great shows, this Friday the Upside will be a packed joint as Zeke, The Nihilists and The Insurgence hit PA. $10 in advance, and we suggest you get um or you might be looking in from the outside. Last Saturday, over 90 of the “big bands” got together to help defeat would poverty through political means. They don’t want your money (They get enough of that...ticket prices for big shows suck!), they want your voice. Whatever your political bent, we encourage you to support this movement by artists who are thankful to have the chance to make a difference. Check out the site at http://live8list.com . DEK will be doing a series of CD Release shows, including one at the Upside. Click here for more info on the bands mini-tour with The Nihilists opening many dates. We have the posters up on the calendar section of the site for all these cool shows and more. Good Guy Turning, Vs. The World, and Self Induced play the Upside Saturday night. New links include the new Trophy Wives MySpace site, and something called www.rockposter.net . TONS of cool info on bands and venues. Also, Brett Pemberton from Hollowpoints/WFTS fame has a new project. Check it out here. Heroes for this installment include Neil from The Last Goodbye for playing with 6 stitches in his hand, Lori from the Legion Hall for putting up with more than humanly possible, Old Gretch Bass Amps, the whole crew and bands who worked the show. Zeros include me for my picture taking skills, everyone who gets to take a vacation, and alcohol ...The nastiest drug known to man.
June 24th, 2005 - I will make up for the last measly little update with a full plate this time. The first bit of great news is not only is Aiden coming back on August 27th, but also on the bill will be Agent Apathy, The Trophy Wives, and the all-mighty Hollowpoints. That show, and The Briggs from Los Angeles, along with The Angel City Outcasts, DEK, and The Nihilists turning the Hall upside-down on Aug 5th makes for 3 INCREDIBLE shows in a row including this Saturdays. Special thanks to DEK and company for helping to put together what will probably be one of the best live shows of the last 2 years with the Briggs show. The first 200 people that attend the Spun Loud shows, starting with the Legion Show this Saturday will get a Free CD. This Saturdays freebie is from The Control Group and features Schoolyard Heroes and Post Stardom Depression. “We plan on doing this for every show at the Legion”, says Dan-O, with a different CD given out at each show. Other news about this Saturday’s show...The Last Goodbye features Neil Richter from Waiting for the Sun, Alan, who spent a brief period in Visqueen, and Rocin, who spent 4 years as the bass player in Punk-Gurls 7 Year Bitch. Remember...you can save a $1 if you get tickets at quimper fo any of the shows (They are in now) till they last. They are pretty cool, and we only make 100 of them. If you are 21+, be sure to hit the Water Street Brewing Company for Old School & Hip Hop in the person of DJ Style E (Who will be spinnin at all the Spun Loud Legion shows between bands) and DJ Frozen Fresh from Vashon Island. Talks are in the works for a big dance/funk/hip-hop show at the Legion, so stay tuned. Personally, I am practicing my “running man” right now! 2 cool shows this week at The Upside. Friday in PA has Typical Ace and 10 Minutes Down and Saturday has Schoolyard Heroes (Pick up the new CD at Quimper...it’s worth it), Adios Pantalones and Cantona ($10). The Warrior (AK-47) will be performing in San Diego! Check out the Poster below. A New feature on Shedboyz....It will appear at the end of every update, and it’s called Heroes and Zeros. Zeros for this update include: Any of the Hiltons, Anyone who promised to take photos at the shows but don’t. Heroes this week include Mike, The Briggs, The people who post on the Shedboard, Florida Sharks, Quimper Sound for the T-shirt they gave me for winning their first E-mail trivia contest.
June 24th, 2005 - A short update this week, but packed with 2 complete new shows. Beside the ever cool show next week (Watch as Common Heroes takes over that Bi-atch called the Legion) 2 more SERIOUS shows are booked with DEK, The Nihilists, The Briggs, and The Angel City Outcasts take over the Legion on August 5th and the much anticipated return of Aiden, with possibly Agent Apathy will happen on August 27th. Real life creeping in on my time this week, so sorry for the crappy update. You can visit the upside this weekend to brighten your day/weekend as Friday has L.A.O., the probable last show for Madness of the North, A Chance Without, and Temptation of St. Anthony and Saturday sees the most Excellent D.W.R. for their CD Release Show, Soma, Scorched-Earth, and Secede. More dribble soon, and we promise that tickets will be at Quimper by Friday afternoon.
June 17th, 2005 - This installment sees some cool new shows, another cool reason to hit up the Legion on July 4th weekend, and some 21plus fun. A lengthily lawsuit has once more delayed the release of the Nihilists release. Seems that AMTRAK has contacted the band with concerns about the train whistles on the recordings, claiming that the whistles are a “sample” and that AMTRAK would be owed royalties for said sound. However, a settlement has been reached, with the band agreeing to appear in a TV commercial for the passenger train service with the slogan “Go...Visit all your punk rock friends!”. Stay tuned, but the band promises to have not only the CD’s, but some awesome new T-shirts to gobble up by the time the band play’s a series of July shows with DEK and the Upside with Zeke. Check their site for more info...and wait until you die. We have decided to use our fat-assed music business pull to get some free CD’s for all the die-hards that attend the Spun Loud Legion Hall shows, starting with the show on July 2nd. The first 200 people in the door will get a CD comp from The Control Group featuring Schoolyard Heroes (Who’s new CD drops this week and can be had at Quimper) and Post Stardom Depression. We plan on doing this for every show at the Legion, with a different CD given out at each show. Other July 2nd news...The Last Goodbye features Neil Richter from Waiting for the Sun, Alan, who spent a brief period in Visqueen, and Rocin, who spent 4 years as the bass player in Punk-Gurls 7 Year Bitch. ...and some say the scene sucks. Humph. Some GREAT news! Aiden will indeed be coming back to town. August 27th is the date at the Legion Hall. A big show on the 21+ front happens on June 24th at the Water Street Brewing Company when the Fenbi International All-stars plays what might be it’s last show with the Low Ones planning on starting out the festivities with an electric set, follow by an acoustic one filled with Chris Gunn’s haunting songs. This upcoming weekends festivities (Unless you are making the road trip with the Nihilists to Olympia) takes us to PA and The Upside. Friday sees The Look, RedBand (ex-drummer from Nirvana), and Forget The Jones (from L.A.), and The Ten Thousand, Silvia, Steven Kattenbraker on Saturday. No doubt...they aint talking about current Foo Fighter Dave as the “X-Nirvana” member. Reminds me of when I saw Testament years back in Chicago and the only original member who took the stage was the X-guitar tech...but you never know. I do know that Forget the Jones are great and are tireless road dogs, having toured a bunch in their short history. Should be another fun weekend in PA. Thursday brings (If your 21+) the return of “the Gong Show” and Queen-Go on a roating basis to the Water Street Brewing Company. Till next week....If you promised pictures from last weeks show, your lame.
June 12th, 2005 - While the Grad class of 05 took a $100 boat cruise, we figure about 250 of you enjoyed the Schoolyard Heroes and 7 other cool bands at the free show last week. The next one should be a goodie, with the first PT show in a while for The Lonely H and Seattle’s almighty Common Heroes joining The Last Goodbye (With X-Waiting for the Sun Neil Richter on drums ), and the always fun Inkreats opening the show. $6 at the door, but tickets that will save you $1 will be at Quimper Sound by the end of next week. The new Schoolyard Heroes release is due out in the next 2 weeks. After listening to an advance...you will be bummed if you don’t pick it up, especially the special dual CD/7Inch vinyl with the 3D glasses and a cut recorded at the old Graceland that captures the bands live energy pretty well. They will hate me for saying this, but definitely the first cut “They Live” is the most polished and mature Schoolyard release to date, and just might make this band huge.
June 3rd, 2005 - A fun time at the Legion on Friday at the Innuendo-produced show...onward to River City Rebels, The Nihilists, Oi Control, and Poorsport tonight at The Upside. SO...the show on Friday featured a set from The Gelding (check out their myspace) that was mesmerizing, at least to me at times, and showed how good this band is. Lunatic Fringe also came out rocking with a great on stage sing-a-long with members of The Inkreats spiting backups. Innuendo followed with more mature songs than the last time I saw them. I missed The Nihilists set, but was told by many that they provided the crowd with their always energetic set, but the sound was kind of crazy, and the only annoying one light frankly gave me a headache the short time I was there. No worries though, as a good crowd attended. Someone post on the shedboard about how USS Horsewhip was please. The highlight of the show for me was seeing former Vigilance music writer Gillian back in town (Come write this crap please), and the ever supportive Efra who will be starting up his Queen-Go shows this Thursday at the Water St. Brewing Co with DJ Style E, who’s new CD is cool. This next weekend, the 10th and 11th looks to be insane for both PA and PT. Friday features “The Bands”, Dan DeMay and Brett Pemberton’s “Thank You” FREE PTJam. The bill is rad, and the Schoolyard Heroes, Shotgun Kisses as well as a stellar list of Kitsap heavy hitters are ready to entertain the young ones while the Grads go off on the water and have fun. Also for the 21+ crowd, the amazing Living Daylights are coming to the Water Street Brewing Co. A must see band if you like roots music on the bad-ass funky saxophone tip. PA Festivities include The Box Office Social at the Port Angeles High School Auditorium to benefit the Independent Film Festival. Movies & Music, on Friday the 10th at 6:30pm, with The Blakes, Audios Pantalones, Karol Karol & others. $5 ticket pre-sale at Anime House/The Upside or $7 at the door. Saturday sees Burke, Nuvaxx, Outside In at the Upside and Contemplation is throwing a zombie prom!. Need Directions? Check out the website Neutral Boy from Bremerton will also be there, making them the hardest working band not from here, at least this weekend. Remembers...if you are in a band, broke as hell, and want some dirt cheap recording on Wednesday or Thursday, Dan and Brett will be recording bands (It’s not a show) at the Legion Hall. Contact Dan at 531-1367 if you want one of the last slots for demo days. We have a MySpace Site, and thanks to all for the entries while I figure the damm thing out. Come and be our friend. Britney Spears only has 650 friends on hers...and I know we ain't gonna get punked out by her. See ya’all Friday at the Legion, unless you have something important to do like graduate. Seriously, CONGRATULATIONS to the 05 class!
Pictures of BOTH nights from Rhody weekend, Courtesy of Kyle McCurdy are up CLICK HERE
May 30th, 2005 - A new show, a few other great ones coming up, a different way to see a movie, a delayed but “worth the wait” CD Release, and a bunch of ways to record your own thang to a CD fill this installment of the noise. Looks like the Dower Cow set as the opener for Kane Hoddar will be the last for the band for a while, and they won’t be at the Legion Hall this Friday, but will return, tanned and ready to rock in the fall. Still doesn’t change the fact that the show this Friday at the Legion looks to be a great one. This Friday also sees Seattle’s Turn Offs hit The Upside with the Stickfigure Strippers and the Helen Killers for you PA rockers. More on shows below, but we interupt this broadcast to present, “Follow The Nihilists CD Release”. OK...here is the real news. The trains from the Seattle sessions mysteriously came back, requiring another mix session, but the artwork is being rocked, and the CD will roll out in a limited edition batch at the free Legion show on the 10th, and at the bands mini-show at PT’s graduation the same day. There won’t be many CD’s at those 2 events, and mabye even Saturday at the Upside show opening for the River City Rebels, but at the Upside opening for Zeke on July 8th the band will have new T-shirts, and the CD done. On the new show front, the much anticipated returns of both the Lonely H and Common Heroes is set for July 2nd at the Legion Hall. Joining them on the bill is former Waiting for the Sun drummer Neil’s band The Last Goodbye, and PT’s rocking stepchildren, The Inkreats. Don’t like Mondays? Well a good way to cure that if you are 21+ is to head on down to the Water Street Brewing Company for Movie Night. It makes Mondays tolerable with a movie, good beer and a rack of balls (pool gutterbrain). The Upside has a great new website, and a cool page for their recording studio. They also plan to release a compilation of bands that have played the venue soon, and YOUR band can be involved. That, and a whole bunch of new cool services for bands is in our SERVICES section. Bummed when 2 good shows in the area on the same day, but besides Dans Schoolyard Heroes show on the 10th, The Upside presents The Box Office Social at the Port Angeles High School Auditorium to benefit the Independent Film Festival. Movies & Music, 6:30pm, with The Blakes, Audios Pantalones, Karol Karol & others. $5 ticket pre-sale at Anime House/The Upside or $7 at the door. Dan DeMay is also working on cleaning up some of the Live Rhody sets that he recorded for an upcoming Spun Loud release to sell at his shows. Don’t forget...we have a myspace site. Come be our friend.
May 25, 2005 - First off, thank you to Martha and the Leader for the cool pictures in the paper this week. The bands appreciate the support, and they even have a cool picture of the Dreadful Children on their site. It’s NOT FINALLY here. The Nihilists CD “Sirens of Silence” is done, but they will be putting in a little more mixing time. Look for it at the free June 10th PT RockJam, as ANY band is welcome to set up a merch table at the show, and keep all the proceeds. If you are a local band, bring your CD’s, T-Shirts, and other merch down to the Legion and we will set you up. Downer Cow will not be at the June 3rd show because of a scheduling conflict, but you can catch them this Friday along with Kane Hoddar at the Upside, in what will be their last show for a bit. They join Madness of the North and Dispatcher Cliff as bands that are taking a break/disappearing from the radar for a while. Now that school is out, we are distributing the concert calendar to the right at Strait Music in PA, and Crossroads and Quimper Sound in PT. It will come out about once a month, and if you have a Port Townsend show you want listed, just e-mail it to us. We figured we might as well get a myspace thang. Seems to be the way, so check out our new lame one at www.myspace.com/shedboyz and add us to your friends list or whatever voodoo that thing does. As mentioned, the big show this weekend is at The Upside with Kane Hodder, Downer Cow, Neutral Boy on Friday ( $10 pre-sale so get there early), and Saturday brings Thirteenth Floor, Coretta Scott, and Undead Eulogy for the traditional $5. The Upside will also host a pair of big shows with the Nihilists opening for the River City Rebels on June 4th, and with the super cool Zeke on July 8th. The migration to the Warped tour the next day should be funny.
May 23, 2005 - Wow... again, this time 2 nights in a row. The crowds were great, the bands were great, and old and new friends had an awesome time at the Rhody shows. Thanks once more to the bands, fans, and people who helped make it happen. Pictures are coming, (or we will kill someone) by Tuesday, and thoughts/highlights (like Parkers "disco" dance with Len and the Big HMW) are detailed in several shedboard posts including this one. THERE IS A SHOW TONIGHT...Monday the 23rd. Just found out about this one. The Pope Marine Building TONIGHT with Dhoom, History of Punishment and Vole Mammoth. The Flyer says it's "Metal" and that it starts at 9PM and is FREE. Onward we rock to a Legion Hall that features the long-awaited CD release from The Nihilists on June 3rd with USS Horsewhip, Lunatic Fringe, Innuendo, and Downer Cow. Check the poster, and be there. Chalked full of cool bands that haven’t played in town in a while, and will be a great show. So how in the world did Dakotah make pet of the day?. The FREE PTRockJam show on June 10th looks like one not to miss. The with the Schoolyard Heroes playing a special set, that will be preceeded by short sets from The Trophy Wives, Wormwood, Valley of the Dinosaurs, Claymore, NeutralBoy, How the Mighty Have Fallen and Shotgun Kisses. all this action will be followed by a little Jam with a bunch of people from cool bands. More on Tuesday, and updates to the rest of the site.
May 19, 2005 - $6 an hour temp jobs tearing apart/setting up huge metal contraptions full of grease hitting town along with the smells of cotton candy means one thing...Rhody’s here! Pretty simple plan for this week. A) Go to Legion. B) Rock. C) Recover. Should be great, and it will be especially cool to see former Hollowpoint Ronnie with the Dreadful Children. So after partaking in the “recover” phase of this weekends feast of rock and punk, get ready to nail some great shows in June. The 3rd sees the Innuendo produced Legion show with USS Horsewhip, The Nihilists, Lunatic Fringe, Innuendo, and Downer Cow., and June 10th the Legion hosts the first free PTRockJam with a hella show. the final confirmed bands for this casual little get together include The Schoolyard Heroes, The Trophy Wives, Shotgun Kisses, Wormwood, and Kitsap County bands, Claymore, Valley of the Dinosaurs, How the Mighty have Fallen, and NeutralBoy. Just to make sure it’s special...it’s on grad night. Hummm...Tea and crumpets with the grandparents after the cap and gown thing or the Pit at the Legion? Another June show of note hits the Upside in PA on June 3rd with The Turn-Ons from Seattle, Stickfigure Strippers, and The Helen Killers. The CD Release of the month is Libido’s “Wasted Youth”, the first official release on Dan DeMay’s Spun Loud Records. Look for a review soon, in the meantime, pick it up at the shows this weekend. It really does rock. New web site alert comes in the form of PA’s Dead Whore River. Nice site...so check it. We have posted a “services” section on the site for all you musicians to find cool services from cool people.

May 12, 2005 -HUGE news in the land of live shows for PT, and a nice pair of shows this weekend at the Upside dominate this update. A real ying-yang week that first saw the cancelation of the PT Rock Fest, but it has been replaced with a new set of shows that should tickle anyone’s paws. The first bit of good news is that the FREE PT RockJam on June 10th at the Legion Hall will feature a special (once more FREE) performance by The Schoolyard Heroes! Remember...this is a show to provide more opportunities for deserving bands and musicians to play a gig, so if you are one of um, click here to see how your band can rip it up with the Heroes. If you are a fan...This is a thank you from all of us, from all the bands and promoters for supporting us all year long. Just come down and have fun. This in combination with the Rhody shows and Legion Hall shows in June on the 3rd with USS Horsewhip, The Nihilists, Lunatic Fringe, Innuendo, and Downer Cow, and the 17th means that there is no excuse or wining that there isen’t any shows too go to. Check the calendar to keep it all straight. High level discussions are in the works for the Big HMW to be the host of some shows in in Port Angeles, and if you haven’t check out his “Words from the Warrior” Section, lately...go get the 411 in Warrior-land. Remember, the big shows this weekend are in Port Angeles with The Lonely H and Patterns at the Upside on Friday, and Saturday brings a cool show with Dispatcher Cliff, Contemplation, Starless Nights and Contra. If you have had a hard time signing up or being able to post on the Shedboard, that should all be fixed now. Till later...
May 9, 2005 - We have not confirmed it yet, but we think that the Vigilance Magazine in PT is no more. More info as we know, but if it’s true, it will be missed. Now... who’s next brave soul to take a vow of poverty and endure endless deadlines and ridicule to give bands press? We will let you know, but looks like a miserable job in the making for some dedicated soul. The coupon to the right actually has a propose. After an epiphany (and serious beat down at Ty’s BBQ of the promoters) they have told me to put out the word that it will be $10 at the door for both shows with this coupon (or even a smile) at the door, and advance cool pass/tickets are available at Strait Music and Quimper Sound, and from some of the awesome street team folks out there. George has sold Crossroads Music to someone from LA (I think), but will continue to run his repair shop and recording studio. The Hollowpoints and Axes of Evil will immediately leave after playing the Rhody shows and play 7 more shows in a row taking them all the way through Montana to South Dakota (With the real Dakotah in toh.) and the Denver area, The run of shows also includes a show opening for Juliette Lewis and the Licks. All the more reason to kick this tour off with a bang on the 21st right here at the Legion. The big shows this weekend are in Port Angeles with The Lonely H and Patterns at the Upside on Friday, and Saturday brings a cool show with Dispatcher Cliff, Contemplation, Starless Nights and Contra.
